Shimano E-bike systems

There is the new app to connect to a Shimano e-bike.
I’ve tried this a few times with my Suunto 9 Peak and E5000 motor unit without success. The watch keeps telling that it cannot find the unit. Bluetooth icon appears in the bike’s speedometer so something happens but not enough.
Have you had any luck with this?

I also tried connect Suunto Race to Shimano EP8 motor… No luck yet… I have Android phone and bike is connected to that, it works just fine…
It would be great to have more detailed instructions for Shimano bike connection.

I think that only one connection with BLE will be possible. Either Shimano system/smartphone or Shimano system/Suunto watch.
-
@ttsirkia I have the same problem with Suunto Vertical and EP800 Probably this new release is still buggy and we have to wait for update
-
@Mff73 that second thread is for Shimano DI2. There are two separate apps.
-
@ttsirkia
oups, sorry -
@ttsirkia I’ve updated SuuntoPlus Shimano app to yesterday’s version (6.05.2024, 10:26) and everything is working fine.
-
@kuba1234 I just can’t get this working… I checked that i have also newest version but how did you connect this? Or is the issue really that i cannot connect same time for Android device?
-
@MikkoKartano After updating I still had the connection issue. Then I realised that my watch was connecting to my indoor trainer and it seems that only one Bluetooth connection is allowed for wath. The same may be with the bike. Try to turn off the telephone and try with the watch. What is important you have to pair the watch within 15 seconds after turning on the bike
-
Unfortunately I have still the same problem with the new version that the watch cannot connect to the bike although the BT symbol becomes visible in the bike’s display.
-
And where is the E-Bike sport mode? It would not be too stupid to have a differentiation on the sport profile level (not only via tagging).
-
@ttsirkia Ok so in my case it sometimes works, sometimes not. starting bike and activity on watch several times helps… and turn off phone bluetooth. Hope next updates will make it more stable.
-
Ok… But in practice, how this connection should even work? Just start the activity on watch and turn on the bike? Or should i try to connect bike as a external sensor for watch, or something else…
-
@MikkoKartano Here are the steps I did just now to connect:
- In Suunto I chose the type of activity (mountain biking)
- I didn’t click start but clicked Suunto Plus
- I turned on my bike with power button
- In Suunto I chose E-Bike Systems SHIMANO
- Several times it failed so I repeated step 4 until it worked.
- then i went back and started exercise:
- I am wondering what happens if you turn off bike for example for charging and want to continue the same exectise later… will watch reconnect automatically?
I hope they will correct all issues within month and everything will start working smooth as with garmin watches.

have you tried to follow the written instructions of the app?
And yes - ony one device can connect to the Shimano wireless unit:
-
@Egika Yep, and it does not connect. I did put my mobile phone to flymode just to be sure that it dont try to connect bike.
Bluetooth icon in bike seems to be visible when clock tries to connect but it fails every time. But at least i know now that i’m doing everything correctly.
FYI, my bike has Shimano EP8-motor and SC-EM800 screen.

@MikkoKartano I don’t have much to add to the instructions by @Egika and @kuba1234 . Connecting SuuntoPlus app to bike should work as long as bike is powered on, and there is no other Bluetooth connection (e.g. Shimano mobile app) to the bike. Setting bike to Bluetooth pairing mode should not be necessary, but you could also try that. I’m not sure if pairing mode exists in all Shimano devices, so you might not have it at all.
If bike shows Bluetooth icon, watch finds the bike, but Bluetooth connection fails for some reason.
If you can’t connect your watch to the bike, or if connecting requires multiple tries, you can send logs to Suunto from Suunto mobile app, and then send email of your Suunto account to me as a private message. We can then check your logs to see what is happening.

@Raimo-Järvi Hi! So my bike sometimes connects but in most cases I require multiple times to connect. The bluetooth icon appears, I wait for ~10 seconds and I have connection error. repeated it several times now and I couldn’t connect at all. I’ve sent you my logs (email: kuba1234@gmail.com). Thanks for your support, please let me know what is the issue.
Btw, I have one more question. If during workout I turn off bike (and the workout still goes) (eg. for battery charging or for pause) then after turning the bike on watch will reconnect automatically?
-
I tried to connect again yesterday, watch gave same error message and i did give up… However when i was starting activity, i noticed that watch was connected to bike and it worked.
This is great app as it shows also battery % which Shimano apps / screens dont… @Raimo-Järvi i sent new logs if you want to take a look of those.
