Heart rate tracking suunto vertical solar

Hi all
I’ve bought a suunto vertical solar and i noted , again, that heart rate tracking during bike activity is completely wrong. Never above 90 bpm…when should have been much higher.
I always faced this issue…suunto 9 , suunto peak and now the vertical. I’m the only one with this kind of issue? -

@Lucadag92 No you are not alone with this but OHR is very Special to the people. Some people have bad measurement, some people its working good. The best results you will get wearing the watch 2 fingers above your wrist. You must have good skin contact. You need warm skin. And biking there you probably have some shoks when you ride. For me the OHR works good enough at home and allday Situation. The better Option when you ride your bike is a chest strap The chest strap measures you heart rate directly in the skin above your heart Level. So you have much more better measurement as on your wrist.

@Lucadag92 well, for bike riding I would suggest a HR belt. OHR for bike riding never ever worked for me, with any watch. This and weight lifting are sports where it’s struggling the most.

@Lucadag92 I watched a youtube video recently that compared the Suunto Race (same OHR as the Vertical), Polar Vantage V3, and Garmin 965 (The Run Testers). Each said the Suunto wasnt great for OHR for sports (but way out ahead on design and battery life), but also said the V3 wasnt that great either, and though Garmin was probably the best (likely because its all plastic and lighter; one tester showed the gorilla glass Garmin screen is all scratched), its also because its a year older and Garmin have worked out the bugs. However, the BIG recommend for all 3 watches for sports was…always use an HR belt if you are serious about tracking heart rate and activity based data.

@mikekoski490 yes i agree with you about the hr belt that for sure is more precise…but currently i think that suunto has some problem with OHR…that need to be adjust…799€ of smartwatch….i’m not looking for perfection for sure but neither a complete bug of ohr during some activities.
Maybe with some updates they will fix this issue…never faced with other sportwatch. -
@Lucadag92 The Vertical is a heavy Watch and I find that makes a difference for me as does outside temperature. For me the 9 Peak Pro is much better for OHR than the Vertical. But, I still use a belt.

When I am being ‘serious’ about my HR / sport, I use a belt.
If I am just cycling to the village for some shopping, I use the OHR - it is ‘mostly’ OK ish… If I see it starts at a rate that is clearly wrong, I usually stop the exercise, tighten the watch and restart, which ‘usually’ works. I do find more issues on the bike with OHR than for walking.
If I am just out for a casual walk with my partner / friends, I use the OHR, and for this it is normally spot on.
I agree the SV is a heavier watch (though there are plenty that are even heavier), but I had very similar results to the above with my previous Coros (Apex Pro), which was quite a bit lighter.
If you have to do the watch up tight until your hand turns blue, it is probably excessive and time to use a belt!

Vertical without solar …
Yesterday a treadmill workout (45 minutes) and today a mountain bike ride (2,5 hours), both activities with the Vertical on the wrist. And when mountain biking there are hard hits on the hands/arms.
The heart rate was spot on, no difference to a Polar Verity Sense (same average, same highest and lowest readings).
No need to use an external heart rate device for these activities.

@Lucadag92 I have the same issues when cycling or running. So you are not unique. I agree that this feature should work better. When I was using my Garmin, it was good enough for steady state runs, but not for workouts. I’d hoped for the same level of performance from my Vertical.
I got a little improvement by switching to a Velcro band, but it’s still not great, and I have to use an external HR strap.
