S9 Screen "blanks out" during runs
-
Encountered this strange problem twice this week. The watch starts the run ok, but at the start of one run, the screen “blanks out”. Thought it was a bug so restarted, but then realized that I could stop and save the watch as normal.
Second instance, went for a long run at the end of the week, same thing happened again, but let it run till the end, before stopping as per normal. (see video here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/170HccP25dG83clnxRNHQi4b3nGH-0DKx/view?usp=sharing)
So far both problems appeared when I’m on the trails/under trees.

Got the same problem twice this summer. Watch was still recording but screen was blank. It remained blank after the end of the exercise. It tooks me to firmware restore to e back to normal.
I have to say my run was under extreme conditions: temperature air was around 38 degrees. It was an extremely hot day.
Never happened again thought. -
it happened to me too just last Saturday
edit: but when you stopped the activity did it save all the data correctly??

My run saved correctly, just to press the button as per the usual steps to stop and save.

thanks, instead I had done the soft reset and it saved all the data except the d+ and d-
-
@gambacorta Yes it did save the data as expected

This happened to my S9B (sw. version 2.20.30) today. I was on the navigation screen with a route loaded. At about 5 km in the trail run the watch display vent blank (light theme is configured, therefore the blank display was also light).
What worked still:- pausing and re-starting the activity (display remained blank)
- entering the options menu (menu was displayed correctly, changing settings like display theme or battery mode didn’t fix the blank display during activity)
What I tried and didn’t help:
- cycle through displays in activity mode
- change settings as described above
- stop the activity, save it and start a new activity
– when I stopped the activity I could see it being saved and I got the summaries, normal display in watch mode
– I tried starting a new activity without soft reset of the watch and it was started with blank display
What finally helped was a soft reset.
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos can I help with anything else to find the root cause?

@halajos I confirm this issue. It happened to me few days ago. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to report it nor send the logs
Some additional observations:
- when I entered the options menu (which loaded ok) and changed the theme from dark to light, the display remained white but still didn’t show anything during the activity…
- after waypoint notification, display turned into very dark blue
- the touchscreen worked (even thought the display didn’t show anything, double tap gesture to show time/lock worked)
- I was also able to open the navigation menu from the blank navigation screen the menu showed alright…
So there obviously is some graphic-related issue. I used navigation with waypoints + SuuntoPlus Safe when this happened.

I sent logs through SA now…

@azeanic same to me S9 non baro (last updates)
cycling in mountain - during activity i press pause to rest - after two-three minute black screen.…press any button no response …only click sounds
-soft reset and now works perfect. (until now)
my activity saved automatically !
-nothing like this has ever happened before
I do not know if I should do or is necessary hard reset to be sure it will not happen again during activity or soft reset solve the problem, fortunately it was a training and not a race…
suunto team wiil help** -
@gerasimos
I would wait with a hard reset and send logs first (plus mailaddress and time logs have been sent) -
@freeheeler thanks man!! i sent logs and email here? or i must go to suunto.com
-
@gerasimos
Let’s ask @isazi , I think you need to send a PM to a moderator, but I might be wrong… -
@gerasimos if you sent logs very soon after this happened, send me a PM with the time you sent the logs, and the email of your account. I can then fill in a bug report with Suunto.

@freeheeler @isazi thanks

I had a slightly presentation of what I suspect is the same issue. my watch froze on the media controls screen when in an activity with suunto plus feature climb turned on. the hr monitor was still on so I thought it hadn’t fully crashed. I went to reset the watch by holding upper right button but instead it paused the activity and I was able to repress same button and from then on the watch was fine in the activity all data still there and no issues.

Hi all,
same happened to me today. During swim session. I had my structured swim workout loaded as SuuntoPlus Guide via TrainingPeaks. Each and every interval was marked as “Press button to continue”. When I was changing from second to third interval, my screen went black and did not recover. However, I knew that activity is still being recorded, so I continued and finished swimming as planned. When I pressed the pause and finish buttons, suddenly, screen came back and I could see summary of my finished workout. When watch returned to normal watch mode I realized that it goes repeatedly to blank screen after few minutes (one or two) and the only way how to wake the screen up is to press any button.
To make long story short. I sent the logs via Suuntolink to Suunto already. @isazi, here is the ID: 225830606300. Logs were sent today at 17:20 CET (cca). So, if you are so kind and create/update ticket for this issue.Thanks!

@zadow I will. Are you sure you were not using a custom battery mode that turns off the screen?
I also need the firmware version used.
-
@isazi I am sure, I am using this sport mode for some time now and have my swim session every other day. I have never experienced this before. Today was the first time.
