SUUNTO BARO 9 backlight + GPS issues on custom mode
-
Hi forum,
Unfortunately I stumbled upon a massive bug during a long run in the mountains, at night. I set custom mode for screen to turn off after 5 seconds, and no backlight (to save battery during daytime whenever I woke up the watch again to check route, etc). As dusk approached, I wanted to change the setting so the light would come on with button activation: something that was impossible to do (yes, I tried switching to all battery modes, which made no difference). To make things worse, recharging watch whilst on pause became impossible, and after plugging-unplugging the watch, the gps-calibration madness began… requesting me to do it every 3-5 minutes on the trails.
Yes, I could have tried to reset the watch, but I would have lost all data.
This is the type of bug that seems like a deal-breaker.
If anyone has has the same experience, or any feedback to share, I would be extremely thankful.
Have a great Friday you all.

@agustin-gonzalez-perez-corral I have a similar problem with both suunto baro 9 (one is titanium).
The problem is since 2.16.26 with the new backlight options. For long runs, I used also the display timeout to save energy (and to prevent watching too oft on the watch/distance ) This worked fine even on a week long ultra trail!
Since the mentioned firmware, the backlight goes off with the first timeout end never goes on! Thats useless on a ultra trail run!
This summer I had to downgrade the firmware to the version 2.14.16 to used my watch like intended! Now I gave 2.18.20 a chance and the problem is still there.
Today I tried several settings and the cause of the problem is the “display timeout switch” in the battery options. When the timeout is active, the backlight goes off and never on. Then I can disable (whlie recording) the display timeout, wait several seconds and with the next keypress, the backlight goes on!
I hope this bug will be fixed with the next update. Disable the display saves a lot of energy ans so battery livetime. And thats the reason why the Suunto 9 was born! -
Hello, same problem, I can’t turn backlight on with neither touch or button press after screen timeout. Also, I’m pretty new to this watch, what does the setting in sport mode options(Backlight:Normal/On) actually do?
Does general backlight option Standby:On/Off has any influence in excercise?
Only thing that is clear to me is Raise to wake function.
There is also option Backlight under shortcuts with toggle. How does that influence excercise and daily mode? Thanks in advance.

@igor-martić This link might help. https://ns.suunto.com/Manuals/Suunto_9/Userguides//Suunto_9_UserGuide_EN.pdf

@igor-martić * Raise to Wake OFF, Standby OFF: Nothing, use buttons to trigger backlight
- Raise to Wake OFF, Standby ON: Constant, low-level standby backlight, previous behavior
- Raise to Wake ON, Standby OFF: Nothing, use buttons to trigger backlight
- Raise to Wake ON, Standby ON: Low-level standby backlight comes on gesture

@agustin-gonzalez-perez-corral I think we already reported this bug to Suunto, but just to be sure, can you tell me your configuration so I can replicate the issue and send logs?

@isazi Hi man. From memory, because all the info that I had fresh was included in my original post. Backlight OFF. Settings - General - Backlight - Brightness LOW - Standby OFF - Raise to wake OFF.
In Workout: Battery mode CUSTOM. Low Color Mode ON. Display Timeout after 10 sec ON. Backlight: Normal.
This is as far as I can remember. Does it help?
A side note: a MASSIVE bug is the inability to simply EXIT the Calibrate FusedTrack screen. Unless you do as the watch says, you are being held hostage. That is very silly. Which happened to me literally every 2-3 mins. (Touch screen was off)

Found a workaround for the backlight in “display timeout mode”:
If this mode is enabled, the backlight goes off and never on! But with the message "Display goes off’ the backlight goes on. If you ress a button while the light is on, it remains on until the next timeout!
