Altitude wrong when going high
-
Hi,
I noticed that my Suunto Spartan Ultra does not calculate the elevation well when I go high in the mountains.
Despite the altitude when I start is correct (I don’t calibrate it because it is correct), when I start hiking/climbing higher up, the error start increasing, normally having an error of 150 to 200 meters at the top. When I start descending, the error start reducing and the altitude is correct again when I descend to the starting point again.
I use it for mountaineering in the alps, going from 300m to up to 4800m doing between 300 and 700 meters of altitude gain per hour.
It always shows that the altitude is lower than what actually is. For example, at the top of Mont Blanc, it would show 4600m instead of 4800m. This is VERY problematic and could be dangerous for mountaineering activities as we can get lost.
My smartphone calculates the altitude using the GPS only pretty acurately, so I wonder why the watch that has GPS and Barometer cannot do it. Is this problem something common? Is there a resolution?
Thank you
