S9 Watch faces

@mister-pyc it’s not for nothing if we talk. There is a ton to learn from people in this forum, about watches, sport, life, training.

And who knows …
…hummm …
…what made you believe it could have been me ???

There is lots of ways to take all these ideas, improvements, proposals, whatever you want to call it, being realistic or not for the company interests now in short or long terms.
One certain thing nowadays is the companies are no longer in charge in high percentage (unfortunately for them) of what they produce, design and what it’s going to happen next next.
As a little fact and funny example, imagine expensive and powerful cars like ‘Lambo’ and Ferrari with its endless history fight between their founders. One day things turned, already happened, and got to got for electric engines (unfortunately soon) instead of amazing sound combustion engines… Would you keep against the current because you say so, would you follow the market? It may sound easy but I’m sure it is not for a brand.
Another tragic story of Spanish motor brands: Years ago, there used to exist Ebro and Pegaso (vans and trucks) and Bultaco, Ossa and Montesa (motorbikes). As many other companies that failed around 60s-80s the lack of focus, market vision, money to invest, techonogy and listening to the market needs ended up with the total failure of their amazing products. Now, here comes the sad thing when you open wide a japanese motorbike engine of any brand. They are all a replica of the first Spanish models. The japanese took the idea, copied its core along with development and improvement they became the best motorbike brands. Not trying to criticise or anything against Suunto, just saying that the market is evolving everyday, of everything really, now from some years ago and bearing this trend for many years coming there would be a moment that if you are not capable of doing what I really need you become useless.
Do you think your Suunto watch should be tactile? What for when you are skiing with big gloves, cycling at 40km/h or maybe running a marathon, should be a must for a good use and performance? I don’t think so, it is just a response of a trend and if you are not in it, you are out and forgotten.
We can see that in many ways, social media (remember Google+), new amazing products or not so good, if this thing is not exactly what the market needs now maybe it is not the time for it and becomes useless. If you bring something that was needed only some time ago, it is again useless.
I can imagine myself the strive of every tech company brand. I work for a different branch of business in the marketing-design-image area and I can say the pressure is high, the rivalry is tough, the price to be the number one is rampagin and all this fight is to bring the final user the best product, the price and the best experience.
I’m sure if there are listeners, here in this forum or somewhere else where they take tips for improvement, the company is smart enough to do the best they can to at least ‘please’ every demmand on their interest and for the good of all both old and new customers because it is more difficult to get a new customer than to make happy an old one. Here is an example of one that never had another ABC or GPS watch rather than Suunto, even had the chance to I preferred to keep with.

SUPER INTERRESTING TO READ
So this site is not only pure SUUNTO products oriented … but also to ahve very good discussions and exchanges of ideas … goofd!!!
BTW …
I’m a harley davidson biker … so it rings me a bell when you talk about sound of the engine …
Also … I like the touchable screen, quite ncie even if I agree with you the use of it is more a “city” one … and I noticed that when I swim the tactile screen is becoming no more tactile at all and do not obey anymore to your finger … same if there is some rain on it … it is not a big problem per say as the same can be done through the buttons but still some may see this as a problem
I saw COROS approach with there scroll wheel and I may like it also …Concerning you thoughs, you are very right !
I will not say it is the market which is such changing but the people today are no more satisfied during a long term about what they have … it is true for their toys, cars, but also partner unfortunatelly (nothing personnal here) … all is becoming just a consumer object that you may thrown very fast even if the next one is far more expensive but has just one more gadget that everyone talk and indeed is pure martketing … this is our new life …
Are we not deviating from the initial post ???
Let’s come back on it : I hope a lot SUUNTO DEV boys and girls listen here because nto only we are suggesting some improvements that we we love but we are already telling them that they did a fanstastic job and we like their watch … we just want more … well … we are aligned with this new world … even if I do not like this high abuse of ressources so much …

If you like bikes, have a look at those Spanish classic old firms, I’m sure you will find some really interesting models.
I got myself an Ossa 350 from 1973, exactly as the one in the pic:

Would be great to see other proposals of interesting designs for new watch faces.
Any new or better ideas of how could new watch faces look and work?
I would love to knoe if there is any way that Suunto could try this new feature in the phone app by choosing watch faces from a more extense gallery options and customise them in same or similar way as we do in sport mode screens.
With that I could say that by 100% there is a massive positive feedback and greater interest and better user experience on the S9s family.

I think that we should not forget that as a company, Suunto, almost for sure has a structure that consists of people paid to benchmark/innovate/testers.
I don’t believe any of those persons, testers included, had never said to suunto “hey guys, maybe you should have customizable watch faces”. It is just suunto that decided to focus on another thing first, due to their limited resources.
I would say, for example on accuracy of gps…If accuracy of gps is more important than watch faces, only market can tell, and that is a decision of suunto to do it that way.
Although we think that watchfaces are “simple”, I believe that may need intensive testing to pass Suunto standarts, for not having bugs/drain battery.
I would be happy if at least the data fields were customizable or I could have any data once I tap. But if they haven’t done it yet, for sure there was a reason. -
@andré-faria I agree and disagree at equal parts, there are many litle tiny things in every new and due product that along its development goes from one hand or department to the other, so I’m sure there is a design department maybe smaller than the Global Positioning System and many other satellite data engineering one. Otherwise would be sillly for a company like this the same deparment to be designer, accountant, tech engineer, janitor and debug technician.
As well as you mentioned there should have been asked before ‘I don’t believe any of those persons, testers included, had never said to suunto “hey guys, maybe you should have customizable watch faces”.’
There must be a big difference between Kilian Jornet and me or you and many around the globe. Otherwise we all could run to the Everest’s summit with flip flops and shorts like going to the baker for a croissant. I mean, different needs for different use and as long as the major number of users are like me now just sports enthusiasts the accuray of the GPS line shown in my phone over the map is not taking my sleep rather than having a cool design among others and of customisable fields that I can choose from.Would you disagree? Maybe, sure, when I was in the Spanish National Track Cycling Team back in the 2000s we had nothing else but HR monitors with cadence, later came the power meters and I sometime after the years having a fun chat with old teammates we remember when we were fantasasing of getting real position and power info in the track, out at the road trainings and also in the gym when weightlifting.
If some of us was able to talk to Suunto about that time wouldn’t make a difference? Probably, the thing is the time will tell but if you focus in data performance and forget the design is like having iOS 14 inside an old push button Sony Ericsson cell. As a company, you can not leave those steps behind. And as a user you can not take for granted that if the company does it this way if for a reason.Might sound aggressive or egoistic but trust me, does not at all. If as a user or as a sportsman would be super happy and conformist or not willing to give any good idea of improvement, I would not be in this forum taking my time trying to bring some clues for future design plans for better performance and experience. Do not even think I’m using this forum in a way of silly arguing with people I do not know. Not a social media fan actually, so I’m happy taking some of my time here for a good porpuse.

In fact I don’t disagree with you. I think that maybe some top athletes don’t care much about gadgets, they just “go” and look at basic/needed features.
But that is why Suunto doesn’t only have top athletes testing (I believe…)Regarding us users, having an impact, I trully know that we have, that is why you see a lot of features implemented.
I just commented in order to “say” that things take time, and sometimes may not be their top priority.
As product engineer on cycling industry, I see it all the time, customers think we can get the latest and greatest tomorrow, but there is more behind it than just “selling it”.
Just for the fun, in the meantime, Garmin got some Suunto watchface! -

That’s right, never said it would be as easy or quick but who knows the results, it could become somthing that the market might need or ask (not only me) and even could put the brand on first position on this kind of features.
Anyway, we’ll see if there’s something they can do for the good.Just for the fun, in the meantime, Garmin got some Suunto watchface!
Haha, this is inspired on Suunto Core, nice approach!

After collecting my ideas of new watch faces (not the designs) plus other interesting ones recently shared from members of this forum, I have endend yesterday with a little resume scheme to not get lost while long posts written. So have a look at these proposals and see if in this format makes more sense.
*Please note that I might forgot something very insteresting and useful to share/propose to Suunto, so please do not hesitate to remind it and I will include it.
All ideas for better experience are welcome, so the file could end up with improvement for the S9 series!

Ok, some kind of thing like I’ve been long talking about is already happeing with Suunto 7 and Wear OS, for me is kind of weird that third party companies with their apps are doing it.
Not sure if feeling happy with all this stuff going on.
Just found out that’s seems impossible to pair Suunto’s Smart Sensor HR belt to a Suunto 7… -
@rhustox
Hello
it’s a good summary, but for me is missing in your list these points :
- Faster access to the compass
- Full light thema on all screens ,not only as today just in compass and exercise view
- Having the compass added in exercise mode even if there is no navigation currently
- This beautiful SUUNTO plus weather screen (or a new screen on weather forecast) also available outside being in exercise
- Possibility to sort the screen in a more adapted order (for example move up altimeter)
I saw there is already in you list
- screens adapted for people with bad eyes like I’'m
- better display when pressing on center button
and I thank you for having kept that
-
Here it is with your last inputs, please correct me if shortening the sentences there was some misunderstanding.

@rhustox
Excellent I vote for you …
Not totally sure people will catch what better use of central button means but I’m sure Suunto guys may catch it …
I was refertint to this post : https://forum.suunto.com/topic/6660/some-much-more-interresting-screens-from-main-default-clock-screen-when-we-pressing-the-middle-button?_=1626278195709Hope you were on the same page.
