Software update 2.13.18 for S series (S3,S5,S9)
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Great…
-
@Brad_Olwin also pretty reasonable. Most ultra runners I know don’t even bother with hr, let alone the track quality. Some charge their watches during the race, others don’t or don’t have to, but if I were to run an ultra I guess that the last thing I’d like to worry about was the watch. I was rather referring to hiking or multi day activities where this shouldn’t be a problem.

Awesome update if not as flashy or sexy as some previous ones
Noticed that I received a “Wait for green arrow” notification prior to running after the update. I waited for five-ish minutes w no GPS lock. Backed out of the workout. Tried again and GPS was found in probably 10 seconds.
After the workout, I received another notification advising on how best to achieve optimal GPS results.
Wondering if this is expected?
-
@stromdiddily perhaps the watch didn’t have time to extract AGPS after the update. Did you go for your workout right after the update finished?
-
@Łukasz-Szmigiel Probably 10-15 minutes between update and getting into the exercise screen…
-
@stromdiddily
I have a joke about this , always you update or reset the watch , use the Altitude settings with location coordinates and when you have the information goes to exercise and start . -
@stromdiddily I’ve had this happen the first run after almost every update. It doesn’t recurr though. There must be some sort of bug in the software. It won’t be a problem going forward, unless it is.
-
I just looked at a track from today’s walk on quantified-self.io and compared it to yesterday’s run and it seems there’s a lot less areas of “less dense” points than before. Basically almost the whole path is populated with high density of points on QS and there are no long fragments with points that are spread apart. Also, the browser in my new phone didn’t die while viewing gmap with points overlaid on it so it’s another plus thanks @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos for phone benchmarking tool on QS
Apart from fun but slightly retarded activity of counting the dots on the map I wonder: shouldn’t the new firmware result in larger fit files and therefore less activities stored in watch memory?

It is not a bug, it takes 15 min or so for the GPS update data to populate appropriately in the watch. So make sure AGPS is updated and don’t outdoor exercise immediately after the update.
-
@Brad_Olwin our definitions of immediate are different apparently but point taken to wait longer next time
-
@stromdiddily I had no issues getting a fix after the update, but between the update and me going outside hours passed. If you go into the About menu you can see if the agps is still being unpacked.
-
@stromdiddily I am not sure how long it takes but this came up before and Dimitrios stated it can take 15 min or maybe a bit more for the AGPS data to be unpacked and utilized. Someone who knows better can correct me.
-
@stromdiddily Same here, after the firmware update I noticed the '“In Progress” text under AGPS in the About menu. After a while, it changed to the date of that day. When I started an activity a couple of hours later, I had instant GPS fix.

Hello
“ Fix increased power consumption when in endurance or ultra mode and at the altitude chart screen (navigating)” could you explain this please? Not too clear for me. Thanks! -
@pacos It means when you are in ultra or endurance mode, and have a route loaded, best GPS fix will activate only when you are on the route screen or altitude profile screen. So if you use those modes, you do not want to leave the watch on either of those screens, but use them only when you need them. In Performance mode it does not matter.
-
@Brad_Olwin ok, very clear, that is great! Thanks

or altitude profile screen.
We fixed that @Brad_Olwin ( I triple checked) .
So now also at the altitude screen it will retain it’s endurance or Ultra settings.
Only in Navigation / breadcrumb screen will it go to full power mode.
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Thanks, did not know that, super
-
I don’t what magic sauce was put into Sony FW but my tracks are as good as they can get now, and that is GPS only. I do not use BeiDou as every time I set route on it, it notifies me every minute that I am off route then back on route then on route again. I will give it a try next time I do a trail run where half of the sky is obscured by a river dam.
-
@lexterm77 I can agree. I use GPS+GLONASS at the moment and last track I recorded I could even distinguish on which side of the road I was running and where I changed sides.
