bad GPS days? (satellite signals?)
-
It usually takes few seconds on my S5, more if I’m on Galileo. Very rarely it takes around 20 - 30 seconds to get a fix, usually when I’m in dense forest or in a stormy weather or both.
-
Even after hard reset without agps I get a lock on 25seconds max.
I would suggest.
12s reboot
Sync with app
Wait about 15 minutes and see in general the GPS timestamp. It takes 15 minutes after reboot to populate the agps. So wait and confirm there is a date there.
Retry

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos thanks. today same conditions. Did nothing GPS within 20seconds… So everything fine… yesterday strange… I will check, if it occurs again… Everything fresh with hard reset…
15min wait only after reboot? I can sync usually with APP and can go out 2 min later normally, right? this is how I do it…
-
@mountainChris yes friend 15mins (or less) it takes after reboot.
Here is why:
After reboot the watch tries to:
- Get and sync GPS time and altimetry using the GPS chipset.
- That can take up to 15 mins
At the same time you have synced (probably) new AGPS to the watch.
That will only be updated after the above 15min task completes.
Makes sense?
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos I can confirm it!!
Some days ago I did a softreset and synced the AGPS and more or less I have this timing. I was a little bit pissed because I lost some km of my run, not registered, but at least now I know the reason.
So, thanks for the explanation!!
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos right, very good to know thanks… explains a lot… what happens if I’m trying to connect GPS in Sports mode without AGPS after reboot? GPS busy due to altimetry and GPS time?
And could there be very few days, when I get no GPS confirmation in start screen with AGPS updated (only flashing green arrow, not continuous), because of satellite constellation (or system partly down…)?
-
@mountainChris About A yes. You should wait and not on the prestart screen.
That is only after a reboot.
About B it can be that. I am not sure, I had it rarely
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos ok thanks… I also only rarely
what is interesting new to me also: seems to be a difference between APGS Update from Suunto link and APP… APP gave me not the 30-06 file now. Suunto link did the update to 30-06 …
-
@mountainChris Some cache? Internet?
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos APP cache… maybe I should have closed the app before and open it again ok… But Suunto Link is also very comfortable because goes so fast…
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos btw I forgot the date of next S9 update. Could you share once again?
-
@mountainChris 22-09-2020
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos wohooo!!! 🥳
-
@mountainChris did you use Galileo? Just asking because there were issues with Galileo sats very recently. Anyway I never had issues with GPS fix, except once after a soft reset (I had to wait 10/15 minutes before getting a lock).
-
@isazi said in bad GPS days? (satellite signals?):

Tried both. Regularly GPS+beidoo… I had with agps a flashing green arrow. This is very very rare. Usually 99.9% GPS conformation within seconds. With the soft reset I made the situation worse. Now I know the 15min. Next time I will run in 0.1% with flashing green arrow (start screen)…
-
@mountainChris I have asked the developers to add something like : pending for AGPS
I think it will happen eventually. Everyone gets buggered about this.
Btw it’s not 15min in total. Its in max. The best todo is after a reset to literally :
Sync
Be outdoors or close to a window
Wait 5 mins and check AGPS x3Not the best but a soft reset is the ultimate situation and it’s good that it clears the GPS chipset cache in order to avoid such things.
FYI: After AGPS is aquired the signal should be very very fast for a “cold” start. Sometimes even faster than normal “warm” starts.
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos thanks very much: check agps x3: three times? In watch?
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos
Reset: hard reset via suunto link?
Cold start: soft reset?
Warm start: without reset, normal? -
@mountainChris no just reboot I mean
