I'm I the only who believes Suunto 9 is more of a SIDEGRADE than UPGRADE to Ambit 3 peak?
-
@TELE-HO Interesting observation, I never thought about it that way. I still have both watches but I wear the Ambit a lot more. what do you think about the wrist HR though? is it worth it?
-
@Mike-P OHR works perfect for me. But as you read it is an individual thing. But honestly, I do not believe in training for pulse
-
@Mike-P
wrist HR might work well for most. For me it is not an option as I have my watch relatively loose for several reasons. And on skitours I mostly stick the watch body out a small gap between the light softshell jackets sleeve and the glove… some garment will for sure cover the LEDs and hence will give bad readings. Plus on long road bike tours I put the watch on the handlebar adapter and then I would need a chest strap anyway -
I agree ambit 3 p and ssu/9 are not the same kind of watch. We hardly say ssu/9 is upgraded from a3p.
Ambit series are over . Suunto is building another line to implement with modern elements.
Just like a reboot of old movie , they are not continuous in story, but they repeat the story with another way.
It reminds me the song Painkiller from judas priest, and covered by Death, they are the same song but the solo in death version is completely rewrote with a deep sad feeling. They are the same song but not the same one.

You have forgotten “drill log” for swimming

@zhang965 Seems like most of you do not run ultras. FusedTrack is the most amazing feature since having GPS track runs!!! It does not matter if I use Performance, Endurance or Ultra mode. I don’t have to charge my watch ever during a race and it will last for the longest single event I may attempt (70h) or 3day fastpacks! Plus, the watch is easy to use and I like the UI, my zones for HR or Power allow me not to put those fields on the screen.
#2 and this is a biggie. Do you forget that in navigation the ambit went as the bird flies??? The S9 has the distance based on the route, another major deal.
All the others that we get with SA! Immediate route drawing and transfer from the phone. Offline sync.
-
@Mike-P Ambit series are over! Was and is a great watch but Suunto isn’t alone in market and have to make new models, new UI, new ressources.
Now we have a almost perfect watch, great design, build, great battery, with Galileo support, fusedtrack, navigation, sport profiles, graphs, and a SA more and more complete (right now with laps) and route design, announced POI and waypoint.Good job all Suunto personnel! Well done!
Is in one step to be a champion. After SI. No more is needed.

@TELE-HO said in I'm I the only who believes Suunto 9 is more of a SIDEGRADE than UPGRADE to Ambit 3 peak?:
S9 is more of a smartwatch where the Ambit is the do-it-all and survive everything tough guy is.
I would argue that Ambit3 is a “smarter” watch than S9. Ambit3 can run arbitrary apps in sport modes and has more customization. S9 is shinier with graphics interface and more comfortable but dumbed down compared to Ambit3.
-
I don’t get you, all s9 users should run ultras ? I even don’t do any sport, i use s9 as a dress watch,
#2, I did say s9 is a watch with more modern elements than a3p, s9 is more adapted for nowadays.
-
@zhang965 even people that don’t make ultras benefict with battery impact. Well is not battery but more less consumption of gps chipset. People with S5 is amazing to get 20 hours in performance mode.
-
@Luís-Pinto
I still don’t understand the argument, I said odd numbers have more modern elements (eg battery improvements)my point was, Suunto odd numbers are not compatible with old ambit series, you cannot say apple is an upgrade of a coca cola, they are not the same stuff, the odd numbers are new beginning point for suunto.

I run ultras. I’ve never ever used FusedTrack because the battery life in Performance mode has been sufficient so far. There are very few ultras that might require 30+ hours to finish. So FusedTrack is a feature that I might use once per year or perhaps never. I would be far more excited if FusedTrack worked in Performance mode for better accuracy on switchbacks.

that is totally true! the ambit apps are top notch!!

@silentvoyager who knows…

Apps apps apps ;-_)
-
which “apps” are you all using on the ambit? an for what sport? (sorry of topic again )
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos
S9ers are jealous about apps, right? -
@mario_b
I’ve got only few installed… but the first one listed I find priceless:- 5min ascent rate (average of the last 5minutes ascent rate in meters per HOUR (!)…)
- ascent rate (transforms the normal ascent rate from m/min to m/h)
- hill grade live (shows how steep in percent you are climbing, for cycling)
- swissgrid x/y (swiss coordinste system)
- DH counter (for skiing, started using it for trials as we started skiing with the kids on the slopes, I went only backcountry until last year, will use this app more serious next season)
- not inuse at the moment: hours until sunrise/sunset at your last gps signals location
there are many more… like tonns of them
you remind me that I long ago wanted to scroll thru usefull apps again -
@TELE-HO apps can solve a big part of the problem. From race prediction to cooper test etc
