Love Vertical 1
-
I’m checking in again after a few quiet years. Ever since I got the Suunto Vertical 1 with Solar, I’ve simply been satisfied — the watch just works. Here’s a quick report:
We spent four days in the mountains, with every day fully tracked at the highest GPS accuracy setting. After those four days, the battery was still at about 60%. Today, after another five days of inactivity (recovery time plus a heatwave), I finally need to recharge the watch.
The display is also wonderfully legible in direct sunlight — I wouldn’t want to trade it for an AMOLED, even though the colors are punchier.
My climbing partner has the Race — he had to lower the GPS accuracy along the way and recharge at the hut.
One more small story: this spring we took a short trip over the long Easter weekend. I’d forgotten to charge the watch, and by the time we arrived I was down to 2% battery. All the extra functions shut themselves off — just the time and step counter remained active. After the four days, I came home with 3% battery left, having had the correct time the whole trip, and the steps had even been logged into the statistics. That’s the kind of thing I love to see…
Unfortunately there currently aren’t any updates for the watch. A single configurable field on the map view would be enough for me, and the map’s level of detail is already perfectly sufficient. I really only need the watch off-trail anyway, in trackless terrain — street names are completely irrelevant to me.
It’s a shame the new Vertical doesn’t have solar charging, and instead comes with a display that draws so much power.
Bring out another new Vertical with Solar, and I’ll consider switching — right now, I’m miles away from giving up this watch.Best, Andreas

@AndreasKauth Battery life (during activities) is pretty much identical. In any case, it’s long enough that it doesn’t really matter for most uses (apart from ultra).
And now that charging finally works without issues (new cable), the battery thing has kind of taken a back seat.

@AndreasKauth This watch is great… and solar is so good! One day I left home for vacation and forgot the charger, the watch not fully charged, during the car drive in the sun it charged up to 100% - impressive and useful.
I understand your ask on maps, but honestly I have a much smaller ask which seems sooooo weird does not exist on a multi hundreds euro watch: a basic stopwatch lap function!!!

I like posts like this. Vertical maybe have no more updates but its very improved since launch. I got it soon it launched (Solar Ti) Than switched to Race 1 like year ago and it was like completly new device. Dont need such a powerful battery and early morning/evening run was better to read with amoled. Switched to Race 2 when came out. Still remember great design and feeling of Vertical 1, and Race 1. V1 is a great hiking/mountaineering watch. I would say I dont understand why Vertical 2 is almost Race 2 but amoled/few% better battery and buttons instead of crown. But than I also understand we cant be mad on Suunto. Its company, and people demand amoled. Yes, there’s still people prefer stronger battery/mip, but its not worth effort for company. Brutal but true. Its not charity. If my main sport/activity would be hiking, I would definitely stay with Vertical 1.
