2.53.42 Race S and Pathetic battery life
-
@withManish
Are you sure about these numbers. I have had my Race S for a year, I get about 4 days of use with 4 hours running total, using Polar H10 HRM. I do not believe that has changed significantly during the year.I would expect some cost in battery life when Suunto add new features.
-
@matram, my watch is not that old, and before the new firmware, everything was working perfectly.
-
Same.
I’ve had mine for less than a year, and I’m now getting 2-3 days max out of it.
Bluetooth connected only to my phone, auto-updates are turned off (but it still updates anyways). The battery has gotten much worse since the last updates. I’ve reset the watch 3 times, one of which wasn’t on purpose but one of the auto-updates bricked the watch.
Switching to Garmin since Suunto has had over a year to fix the auto-update bug, but can’t manage that.
-
@alp1n3 Right, every update comes with more issues; I do get other glitches, but a core power issue? Power is what we all need in such watches, which is why I choose them over Apple and other smartwatches. They are also walking down this path. We need a basic, robust system, not freels, which, anyway, are not accurate.

You are of course free to switch brands when ever you like and I think it is interesting to see the approach of others.
However… if you switch brands in the expectation to find a bug free watch with great battery life, you will be disappointed. I switched from a very expensive forerunner 965 to my current race s. For me, battery life is about the same (garmin charge every 3 or 4 days, suunto every 4 days) but the amount of bugs I experienced on that garmin is incredible.

@elbee I agree with you about changing brands, and every brand comes with its own set of issues. The major issue with all watches is battery life, and they are aware of these issues. Rather than addressing that basic need, they keep adding new features that aren’t that important.
When they advertise 15 days of battery life and then one update puts it down to 3-4 days of battery life without acknowledging the issue or offering a quick solution, it is more frustrating.
Most good rechargeable batteries have 300-400 recharge cycles; if you consider a week’s battery life, your watch lasts 5-8 years easily. My old Ambit 3 still works perfectly, just with a little less battery power after 8 years.
When I am buying a Finland-based company watch, at least I can ask for better support and solutions for issues.

@alp1n3 By the way, you can still restore old firmware, as your watch stores the last 3 firmware versions on it. Here are the steps you can go back to old firmware.
I just rolled back to old version 2.50.26; let’s see how it performs.
Here are the steps.
1 - Open Settings: Press the middle button to enter the main menu and select Settings > General > About.
2 - Scroll to the Bottom: Swipe all the way down until you see the Data Privacy section.
3 - Trigger Debug Mode: Press and hold the bottom right button for 12 to 20 seconds while on this screen.
4 - Select the Package: A hidden menu will appear. Scroll down and select Select OTA pkg.
5 - Confirm Downgrade: Choose your preferred previous firmware version from the list, then press the middle button to start the 10-15-minute rollback process.

I have a similar attitude towards watches as you. I don’t need yet an other fullbodyrecoveryindex number. And I look at battery life in years, not in days.
My Ambit 3 sport was quite nice, my forerunner 935 lasted 6 years. I hope, and expect, my race s will also last many years. -
@elbee, changing bands is another problem; you have had data in the system for so many years, and there’s no easy way to migrate to another platform.
-
On iOS there is rungap for datamigration.
And I use strava and intervals.icu. It collects data from multiple sources (I had different brands in the past).
But most importantly, data of 5 or 10 years ago hardly has any relevance. But I’m no hardcore data collector.
