Elevation gain suddenly inaccurate on flat runs (last 2 weeks)
-
Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing an issue with the elevation gain reported on my Suunto Race S and wanted to check if this is normal or a possible defect.
For about the past two weeks, during my runs in the city (mostly flat routes), the total elevation gain at the end of the activity seems way too high compared to the actual terrain. Even on flat courses, the watch reports significant elevation gain.
I’ve already tried:
- cleaning the barometric sensor
- restarting the watch
- waiting for a proper GPS fix before starting
However, the issue is still there.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
Could this be a barometer/calibration issue, or a hardware defect? Thanks in advance for any help

@gliuk88 can you show an example?
Advice: clean sensor more

My Race S also inflates the elevation gain. I don’t know if it has also done this but I noticed a month a go when it reported triple on an about town bike ride. I use the Strava feature to correct and have confirmed that this issue is with the watch as the routes and climbs are known elevation gains that are much less then the watch summary.
- The sensor is clean as is the watch
- It has been restarted
- It has been synced before the start of every ride
- It is set to use GPS data for elevation but still reports as if bar changes are overriding GPS values
This seems to be systemic as there are other forum posts here and in Reddit about this issue.
This is a fundamental feature requirement that a watch like this has to get right. As bad as if it couldn’t keep time or distance. Imagine the watch saying you did 10 hours when you did 1 or 100 miles when you did 20.
