Race Nutrition App Needs a Major Usability Overhaul
-
Hi everyone, I recently made the switch from the Garmin Forerunner 965 to the Suunto Race 2 and I’m absolutely loving the experience so far. The hardware, design, and overall feel of the Race 2 are fantastic.
One feature I relied on heavily during my last marathon with Garmin was the alerts function. I had it set to remind me when to take a gel, a salt tab, and hydrate. It was simple, effective, and made race day fueling stress free.
So when I discovered the Race Nutrition sports app on Suunto, I was thrilled. But after trying to set it up… I have to say, it’s incredibly unintuitive. The current system of adding multiple “segments” is clunky and confusing, especially for something that should be straightforward.
What I’d love to see:
-
A clean interface where I can simply type “Gel,” set a time (e.g. every 30 minutes), and select a repeat option.
-
The ability to set multiple types of alerts (e.g. salt tab every 60 mins, water every 20 mins) without having to manually calculate and stack segments.
-
Larger text and clearer prompts during the run, the current display is hard to read mid-race. A full screen colour background with large text would be great.
-
A more distinctive alert sound. The current one is short and easy to miss, especially in noisy race environments.
Also worth noting:
-
When trying to activate Race Nutrition on the watch, I sometimes get an error saying “Maximum amount of SuuntoPlus apps enabled” even though I have none enabled. It’s frustrating and makes setup feel unreliable. Clearly a bug that needs to be fixed.
-
The current limit of 20 segments makes it difficult to use this app for longer races like ultra marathons, where fueling strategies often span several hours. A repeatable alert system would solve this elegantly.
Why this matters: Polishing the user experience for apps like Race Nutrition is key to keeping new customers like me engaged. I’d love to avoid defaulting back to Garmin purely for usability reasons. As someone new to Suunto, it would be great to see that customer experience is a priority and that timely updates are made to address issues like this.
I’d also love to hear from someone at Suunto if this kind of update is already in the works, or if the feedback is being received and considered. It would mean a lot to know this is on the radar.
Thanks for listening, and keen to hear if others have found workarounds or share the same experience.

@porter297 in another thread someone recently recommended to (ab)use structured workouts for this.
