Trackback or similar function
-
Hello, as written in an ealier thread I am thinking of buying a Suunto Vertical to replace my old fenix watch.
The fenix is too overloaded in my opinion with gadgets I do not need.
Things I would need are long battery life and good navigation features. Therefor I thought of buying the Vertical (still with a lot of things I do not need but way better then the fenix)
But now I read that following back an existing route is only possible with online access as the route needs to be transferred to the smartphone and new planned and then uploaded again.
On the fenix I was able to turn around any saved track directly on the whatch and then follow it as any other track.
Might there be something similar with a future software update? -
@fosca There is a track back on the watch and if you simply reverse your direction the route will reverse as well after 1/4 to 1/2 kilometer.

@Brad_Olwin thanks for the information.
This is better then nothing but not the same comfortable function my old watch had. There I just could pick any existing track and follow it from the end to the start. For example on a multiple day trip I could track the first day and save it and on the last day I just could follow this track back to the start. Which is of great help if the conditions are not good enough for the initial plan and you need to go back the way you came e.g. in bad or foggy weather. -
As I am completely new to the Suunto universe maybe I have overseen something:
In another thread I have read that if I would be at the end of a route and following it backwards the watch will automatically lead me to the start along this loaded route. Means that the route is automatically turned around.
Is this correct? @Brad_Olwin I think this is what you tried to explain.
Together with the breadcrumb function that should do it for me.Another question:
Is there a limit for the amount of routes that can be uploaded to the Vector? I think I read something like this in a review. -
@fosca @Brad_Olwin I guess I understand and share what you are asking for. When you are following a planned route, you just need to start walking in the opposite direction and the planned route will reverse… great… so far so good. The problem is if you do not have a planned route, you are tracking your path and then you want to turn it into a route and follow on reverse.
Long story short: is it possible to turn a track into a route?
Not sure it is possible… I use a Vertical but did not find how to do it. I would expect from a logged activity… but there isn’t any way.

@fosca Yes, there is a feature that will automatically reverse the GPX route you are following. However, it is not very reliable and should not be fully trusted, as discussed here - https://forum.suunto.com/topic/13785/i-have-zero-confidence-in-suunto-route-navigation
The best solution on a Suunto is to probably just follow your breadcrumb route back to the start. There is an option called “Find back” in the navigation menu, but this simply gives you a bearing and distance back to the start of the activity. It does not do any routing like you might find on a Garmin watch, for instance.
Suunto’s navigation is generally very good. Most find the mapping experience to work rather well when following a route. The layout is simple and the maps very responsive. There are, however, a few things that don’t quite work as expected. But this could be said for competitors watches as well.
As for a route limit, it used to be 20, but I can’t confirm whether that is still the case.
