I’m going into the third week since I got the Race 2. Everything works fine except, it seems, the sleep tracking. Besides recording almost everything as light sleep (with my previous watch, the average light sleep was 57% over a year), there are several gaps in the graphs, as you can see in these images. On the other hand, HRV was only measured on one night. It should be noted that heart rate measurement had no issues at all, according to the Suunto app. Does this seem normal to you — that the app still needs some time to learn my sleep patterns — or could there be a hardware problem with the watch?

@gogapo If you do your research on this forum you will see it is a pandemic of an issue with certain users. It is a bit divisive because sleep tracking appears to work flawlessly for some owners while with others it will be an issue that is perennial. They will “fix” it in an update only to undo it all with another “fix” update.

If sleep tracking is super super important to you Suunto will probably disappoint long term. And as you can see from all the Suunto watches I have used from below it has ALWAYS been a problem for me. It is not a watch that has faulty hardware, it is a bad software issue. My Coros is 99.8% perfect every night for sleep tracking. My Garmin Fenix 7 pro is about 85% perfect. The Vertical when it had FirstSense was amazing for me, but now that Garmin owns FirstSense and Suunto is using their own version of sleep tracking it has been a proper dumpster fire. I mean like a dumpster with oil and more oil in it.

But then again you will see posts that will make you want to do bad things like: “Mine is fine” or “Mine works great all the time, do a soft reset.” Nope that is not it. Nope nope nope.

It’s like your friend that has always been super skinny their whole life giving you weight loss and diet advice. NOT USEFUL.

@Stavrogin I love the ending of the post ahahahhahah

For me it’s really simple: I just need to figure out whether it’s actually a hardware or a software issue. And from what you’re saying, and also from the feedback I’ve seen on Reddit, there are more people with the same problems as me – gaps in the middle of sleep, etc. If it’s software, I’ll keep the watch because it’s better in almost everything compared to my Pace 3 (even the battery – if I use dual band, the Race 2 lasts longer and it’s AMOLED compared to MIP). In fact, I even did a hard reset on the watch and apparently it wasn’t really necessary.

As long as the hardware is fine, I don’t mind this downgrade compared to the Coros Pace 3 (because in most of the other aspects it’s actually an upgrade). Every ecosystem I’ve tested in the past – Coros, Garmin, Amazfit and Apple – has weaknesses, and in the end it’s a matter of seeing what we’re willing to give up. So, I’m willing to give up poorly tracked sleep stages – as long as the hardware is fine. And apparently my hardware is fine, considering all the reports about sleep issues.

@gogapo That is exactly where I am at with Suunto. It is helping me track my recovery the old fashioned way, by feel.

Who knows, maybe they will fix it in the next update. The good news is since the Race S and now the Race 2 Suunto is more and more popular. Hopefully this money will lead to more people working on issues like these.

I have hope, but at the end of the day we all have to decide what is most important for us. I am sure that the pros are either using something like Whoop or do not care at all about how their watches grade their sleep.

@gogapo Same with me. Its the worst watch of them all. This last year i have had Apple Watch ultra, epix 2 pro, polar v3, amazfit helio strap (still have that). For the most part they all line up, both in terms of sleep detection and deepsleep.

Race 2 on the other hand. Last night was horrible. I woke up and couldent sleep for 15 min, slept uneasy and then woke up at 4.30. I turned off DND and used the watch, toilet, than chilled in bed. Watch is reporting full 7 hour of sleep, 3 hours of deep! and 0 wakeups. When I woke up it showed 62% score, and 1h 45 min of deep sleep.
Then it categorize the next 1 1/2 as sleep and most part of deep. Sleeping avrage HR was 67, min sleep 62 and still this insane score.

I get it, no watch are perfect, but if they could be a little bit in the ball park of sleeptime and deep it would be great.

              I regret i dident return it…

@KingK0ng that’s so interesting… my issue has been a complete lack of tracking. Usually it only give me a nap or an hour or two…

@Stavrogin happend to me aswell. Had a night where i slept 10 hours and it was marked as a «nap».

Yesterday i did a hard reset off watch. For the first time it tracked my sleep time spot on (but did get out of bed when waking up). Deep sleep was for the first time below 2 hours (1.40, but 40min more than my helio strap). Im hoping it continues as im getting tired of it. It ruines recovery score

For me watch are too optimistic. It take long for me to fall a sleep, but as soon as i don’t move it is counted as sleep. Same at early morning i wake up, i can’t fall a sleep again, i stay in bed until alarm, it is counted as light sleep. It is not too horibble but it is not accurate. Sometimes it works perfectly but not always. Than there is REM and it seems to be ok, twice i was waked up during dream (should be rem phase) and i see in graph that at time i was woken up, it it was counted as REM. So at least this is accurate.

Last night i wake up at 3:00AM and couldn’t fall a sleep again. I checked time multiple times, i than moved to living room and watched some movie on sofa. Watch found out i don’t sleep anymore. And than between 5:30 and 6:30 i was just laying on sofa, it was counted as Nap. Seems quite good. Except it didn’t catch earlier in the same night that i was on toilete.

For sleep i wear watch loose on wrist as i don’t like to feel it tight on my wrist. Looks it doesn’t make problem for watch to measure HR and blood oxygen and HRV.

My sleep tracking is getting worse every day. Still no HRV, and last night was tracked as two naps. Besides the sleep tracking, I’m really enjoying the watch.

@gogapo I had a couple of those naps while sleeping with my Race S as well. Usually it works fine for me, though. At least for overall sleep duration. But don’t look too close at the stages.
Interestingly the last two nights that my watch woke me up with vibration in the morning, it detected my awakening two minutes before the alarm.
