Does the Suunto Vertical titanium watch need a chest cardio strap for heart rate monitoring during hiking etc.?

@Martin-Deehan No but the OHR is quite variable for people. Some it works well some not.

@Martin-Deehan For hiking no . For running must have. Both Vertical and Race got terrible HR sensor. My HR is 180 drop to 40 in 5 seconds. No matter how I wear watch or how tight. I got 60 HR at rest by the way. It forced me to buy chest strap and it’s ok now. For hiking or just daily walking/working it’s ok to use watch hr only.

@Tami999 I am with @Brad_Olwin … OHR works excellent for me with all activities for the last years, be it running, hiking, cycling, Nordic walking, swimming, etc.
But that does not seem to be the case for everyone.
And although it works perfectly for me: I like ZoneSense, and that means using a belt.
Recommendation: try it - and never underestimate how important the right position of the watch and tightness of the watch-strap is.

using a Suunto Vertical & Suunto Wings; mostly running (AKA stomping around) and cycling through the northern german "wilderness", and wherever else I have the chance to do so

That’s photo I found from march from very light jogging on theeadmill when I started adventure with running and prepare it for more intense. Anyway I think also software put his 5 cents because I think at the beginning 2 years ago my Vertical that I used worked very good during activities like cycling and noticed these drops after some time (could be after update). I also remember I could take off watch without pause activity, see it’s losing contact with my skin, put it on hand again see 40 HR back than after 5 mins of running - Boom! back to 140+ without doing anything . I always got watch on the same spot above wrist bone, with same tight. I tested different straps, spot on hand or just loose/tight strap

Now I running with belt and it keeping 170-180 almost all the time without any drops.
