Gorilla Glass vs. Sapphire.
-
@Tami999 You’re welcome.
To complete my answer : Since July I use the race S as my everyday watch, and also during night (it’s very lighter and smaller, and it as sleep phases that my Vertical is missing). Considering I wear my watches H24, I estimate that the Race S is around my wrist 75% of the time, 25% for the vertical
A bit off topic : I wanted to extract you what amount of activities I have done with the Race S but I just tried : it’s not possible to sort activities by device used in the app (I mean, there is no automatic “tag” for watches, and even if device used is displayed in activities summary, it can’t be used for request !)

I have no problem to sleep with Vertical :P.
In meantime I found reddit post with GW4 with Gorilla Glass and Guy get scratches on first day. Do we know what type of GG is on Race S? I wonder if I should just buy screen glass for few $. And change it when gets so many scratches. I remember how I used it on Vertical, and after few days (not even week) I had so many s
cratches, than I throw them all away and haven’t used any for 12 months. But again it was Sapphire on SV. -
@Tami999 I have no scratches on any sapphire glass except headfirst into a rock pile on skis with one small scratch. Gorilla glass has scratches but not visible unless you tilt at an angle with the screen off under a light. So, very durable for me but clearly not sapphire.

You could prob. find a “screen protector” the correct size for the Race S. You know, like for your phone. A sacrificial thin glass or plastic layer you can remove and replace.
-
I would advice against glass protectors for the Race S. The bezel ‘lip’ is so slight that any glass thickness will stick above the screen like a sore thumb… My Garmin FR955 (Gorilla Glass 3 DX) has about twice the lip height, and the tempered Diruite (“9H Super Hardness”) glass I applied shattered from a drop less than 0.5 metres down on flat tiles in a bath house. I never reapplied a protector on that watch and it is pristine half a year after that accident. Though I mainly run, without falling, for my activities and don’t wear watches during leisure time.

I’ve had my Race S for 5 months and there’s a very small scratch, not noticeable unless at a specific angle/light direction.
I think that my next Suunto watch will be something with Sapphire Crystal though (Race 2? Vertical 2?), just for peace of mind.

I’m just thinking to wait for another Suunto AMOLED with Sapphire (smaller than regular Race)… maybe this year. Thanks everyone!

I wouldn’t hold your breath. I’d actually be less surprised if the next Race has gorilla glass rather than the Race S having sapphire. The price point of both watches is hugely competitive and there’s an argument that as running focused rather than adventure focused devices they don’t need the sapphire glass, leaving it for the more expensive Vertical.
-
@far-blue time will tell! Other companies are starting to put sapphire crystal on cheaper watches (the new Amazfit Active 2 at just $99!!!).

@Bastienhere
On premium version (130 dollA) not the standard one, and maybe it’s coated -
