Suunto Ocean SW update 2.36.18 (2024 Q3)
-
@Brad_Olwin Even my Olympus TG-5 has a better compass, and its not a compass company!
-
I dived with the new software today and I wish it had delivered more value to customers.
I think it’s safe to say that ALL owners of the Ocean should still count themselves as early adopters. This is a device with great potential that is not matched by its software.
The screens are attractive and readable but the user experience remains clunky and unsophisticated*. I am so frustrated by clicking through a long list of fields (that just got longer) when I’ve no interest in many/most. Especially so when I accidentally overshoot and need to go through them all again. The compass that’s added to this list is only marginally more useful than a chocolate teapot - every diver that needs a compass is still going to have to take an additional device to overcome this glaring - like GLARING - shortcoming in a premium device from a very experienced company that should know better.
There are a few excellent mock ups on here that lean into the Suunto design language without copying competitors. I think it’s obvious that two of the data fields need to be variable and controlled in real time via the buttons (e.g. button 1 - field 1, button 2 - field 2, button 3 - Arch). I really don’t need to change the brightness mid-dive, lock the buttons, nor switch gases (but get that others might). If this drops something necessary maybe additional screens are needed and button function varies by screen.
Additional customisation in settings or via the app would be good - in particular turning off data items that are just clutter (I don’t want the clock really, PPO2 may not be needed if all you want is the no-deco info, etc…).
*I will not have a pop at the Suunto app here but that’s another example of largely pretty but woefully under-capable aspect of the Suunto ecosystem.

Yes, you are both right!!
Just look at the compass on my 6 year old Suunto Eon. It is miles better than what the Ocean offers:
You are right, @Brad_Olwin , they need to make the dive screen customizable.
Yes, @sacrevache, I saw this YouTube video showing what you are descibing.
I was holding back on this computer, but after seeing what Suunto has come up with after so many months of the anticipated compass, I got so tired of waiting that I ordered a Shearwater Peregrine Tx today and will not look at Suunto for a while. This has been such a let down and such a shame since the Ocean is so beautiful and has a great display and great feautres.
I hope Suunto will see this and do better!

@diogao13
This is hilarious after I found out that it is a digital camera. -

This is hilarious after I found out that it is a digital camera.I still hope that Suunto will revert this situation in future firmwares. The hardware is great (screen and battery are amazing), the software includes a lot of good features, but still needs a lot of polishing and improvements.
Just an example. Considering Suunto expertise with RGBM algorithm, there should be an option for the user to choose: Suunto Bühlmann, pure Bühlmann, or Suunto RGBM.
Why did they abandon RGBM?
Why did they choose that beautiful, but poor screen layout?Probably diving activity is not the main focus. I don’t know…

@Brad_Olwin found, thanks. As for application Suunto, i want to step in each certain dive, but i can’t. I only see table and graphic.
Hope that you add it in next updates

Hi everyone,
I see the update as available in the Suunto app and it says, it could take some time to download. However there‘s no progress and I gave it the whole night to complete the download, but nothing. Pressing the ‚Update Now‘ button doesnt do anything…
As I am currently on diving holiday, I would love to get the update! Any idea what I can do to force or expedite the download/installation?
Thanks Frank

@diogao13 Indeed. So many questions and very few answers. Suunto lost and oppurtunity to make a great product from launch!
-
- check your watch is connected with the app via Bluetooth
- in the app, check that your watch is connected to wi-fi
- start the update in the app to transfer the file to the watch (the update is a hotfix, the download takes less than a minute)
- go to update settings in the watch and starts the 2nd step of the update procedure

issue for divers using tank pod. Here there is a thread about it:
It would be nice to remove some information on the “trash bin” in the bottom, even without customization.
I mean: there is no point of having air pressure, SAC rate AND Gaz time when I don’t have a Tank pod! -
@Simon-Mongeau, exactly.
Having more info on the screen, it could automatically present only the remaining infos on the switch window.

Hi, there is a problem with measuring distance in open water swimming. I just bought Suunto Ocean, I have been using Spartan Ultra for 6 years, mainly ocean swimming over 4000 times. I compared Suunto Ocean with two other computers, how they handle ocean swimming and the results are surprising https://youtu.be/WLeTcv6Fqxw?si=b0ZBoaW8zeVbFK_l , Ocean was the worst… Ocean has a software problem. I tried 7 times, the results are always wrong.
-
@Arturro There is a answer to the question: “Measured distance in swimming is wrong”. Summary of Suunto Ocean tests, after the update 2.36.18. Tests for 9 days and at the end a summary of the discrepancies in Excel.

Yes. This is currently being addressed in the upcoming firmware for Ocean
-
@Egika I can’t tell you how delighted I would be if this arrived before 0600 Pacific Honolulu time, on the 21st. The ‘big’ firmware update arrived for my Vertical literally as I was about 5km of the start of a nice, long hike in Scotland, so I’m available for a repeat of that.
-
@EzioAuditore What keeps me out of buying the Ocean (Vertical Amoled and without wheel), are exactly the same things you say:
- Climb Guidance
- Zonesense
With the development already done and after the waiting period of further testing, I understand that those things will probably be pushed on 2024 Q4.
Then the yet pending bug fixes I posted for the rest of the watches (no need to duplicate posts):

@dreamer_ Sure but as I stated in other posts and since I own the 3 latest releases of Suunto watches. The Ocean has been the most reliable so far (except of the missing race/lactate predictions - this though I think is due to the fact I never run without a belt). One should note that I mostly use the Ocean mostly for ground activities and very little for water
-
@EzioAuditore I can confirm about reliability. Race prediction works on my Ocean but as per Suunto is a bit too optimistic especially with the longer distances.
I suspect it doesn’t include the Lactate Threshold algorithm licensed to the Race which looks like the only watch to have it—if anyone knows.

Bonjour,

Hello,
hello, no one to answer ?
