Suunto Race S general discussion

@Stoke80 thank you.
Do you use the same screen setting for activates as for normal use? -
Depends on the activity.
Generally yes.
But for road cycling I have the backlight in medium and the AOD to ON, so I can see the data while having the watch on the handlebar.
Just regarding charging speed. This morning I got from 17% to 88% in not even 30 minutes. And I charged with the old, small apple 5W charger.

Hi guys, new Race S user here Jumped from Garmin boat and it’s quite interesting ride till now got a few questions regarding HR monitoring:
- Does all day tracking of HR counts towards any sport metric (training load, recovery)?
- If I turn it off will it work during sleep?
- From your experience is there significant battery gain when it’s turned off?
- The idle (background) readings of the HR are totally wrong. Right now when I’m just seating it’s constantly around 100bpm. Normally I have it around 50-60. Strange is that during activities it records it correctly.

Does anyone know the reason why the upper button in the map view does not stop/ pause the activity?
It seems the button does not have any functionality, so why not using it for the same purpose on every other screen? -
@lessthanmore that may be a bug, I would need to ask.
-
@isazi Thank you, please keep me posted.
-
@lessthanmore
@isazi
I think it is by intention because the upper button with non digital crown watches zooms in and out and from what I understand start/stop would be possible with data screens only… imagine alti graph uses the upper button for zoom, too and map and graph are somehow related IMO -
@freeheeler Thank you.
So, there should/ could be a possibility to add that “feature” for Race and Race S?
It’s a little annoying to switch screens before pausing and then have to toggle all screens before coming back to the map. -
@lessthanmore I asked Suunto to have the upper button used for crown watches too

No idea if it will change.
The top button is used in other screens and S+ apps in a different way anyway… -
@Egika Hope dies last

Please, new race s / Suunto user. Coming from Coros pace 3.
I got brightness question.
So one of reasons to switch to this watch is because im 46 and got elderly long vision, I need glasses for close reading. That is not problem in daylight, but during night when you mix MIP screen and “so so” lighting + and my vision its like -> not good. I see lot of people scared of too much light during night from AMOLED, but in my case that helps me see better during night activities. And I noticed this watch has brightness sensor and is dimming screen in low light. And there are 3 brightness levels. So my question is because its hard to see difference, I need info what should be on the paper / how the watch is designed:
When Im in dark, is there any difference mid vs high brightness?
Is this “mid” / “high” the maximum potential of watch brightness (during daylight) or it also shifts “minimal” value, so in pure dark “high” is somewhat brighter than “mid”?many thanks

I am a lot older than you are! I need glasses for reading as well and have no problems seeing the Race S at medium or low brightness while running at night. In fact, the high is to bright and I do not use it.

Is it still so that EU and US orders are made in Finland and the rest in China? I am based in Finland and the one I received is made in China. Frankly, a bit disappointed.
-
@altcmd Same for my Race S (Austria) - also made in China. They changed the description on the website a few days ago, I made a separate thread for it
It seems the whole production is in China from now on. For you in Finland this must be even harder, but also as an European I feel very disappointed
-
Well, I might differ from quite a few but despite the lovely form factor and size, Race S just wasn’t for me. I think that the transition from MiP to Amoled isn’t something I am able to bridge at all. In all honesty, I find the use to Amoled tech on endurance and sports watches to be pointless, even though that’s what every manufacturer is doing.
Sorry Race S - maybe I will wait for the Vertical S, if it were ever to be
-
@altcmd You are right. Too bad the Vertical S doesn’t exist and the 9PP has no maps. So I think in the moment Race S still the best choice.
-
@VoiGAS when did you order? I am also located in Austria, ordered on release date and mine is made in Finland

@isazi What i do not understand is, why the crown ist not utilized during sport modes to flip pages, further and also backwards. I mean there is a new UI element, which is completely dead during sports. I think Coros uses it this way and I would like it, because having a lot of data pages and maps and Suunto plus, dailing backwards could easily access maps or last pages, which makes much sense. Why is the crown not used in sports and will it come?

that is a good point, it would be useful for sure, maybe the drawback is that it is relatively easy to accidentally rotare the crown during an activity, while is way more difficult to push it …
