Topo maps street names
-
Hello:
I’m just thinking of buying the Race S and found out that even though the maps are very detailed and crisp. it lacks one fundamental feature - street names or names for any of the objects listed on the map layer. Why is it difficult to add this feature? Garmin Epix/Fenix and 965 lines has it. Apple Watch has it with third party apps like FootPath and GooseMaps. Is this something we can see added in the next software update? This will be a huge plus and will be a great differentiator given the excellent maps view on the watch. -
@Vasudevan what is fundamental for some is annoying for others. In my case that was one of the features I most hated in Garmin… I want a clear and crisp map to navigate when trail running or graveling and do not need to see names.

I totally agree with you!
I choosed Suunto because its a 100% thoughtful designed sportswatch.
For me there is a clear difference between a sportswatch and a smartwatch.
I have never needed a street name when practicing sports.
App and watch should not to become too fat - they do exactly that very well.
Less is more - map on a sportwatch should be recognizable within one short view.
When i need more details on map, i take my mobile phone with a powerfull thirt party offline map app.
Same if i want to hear music, or connect to social media and all other things besides pure sports. -
I disagree with both of you. Say, I’m lost in the middle of a run and wanted to see where Iam. Without knowing the location using the street names or names of other objects on the map, how do I figure out where I’m? The main purpose of using a watch like Suunto is to avoid using a phone. If phone is what I need, I might as well use it and don’t need a smartwatch at all. Also, Garmin does it wonderfully well and the battery lasts for close to 10+ days. The reason I’m not liking Garmin is the UI as it is not that good and it lags due to low memory on the watch. Finally, Sunnto can have a setting for the user to turn on/off street names as needed.

@Vasudevan I understand your point. It’s a general discussion like taste of food. Nobody is wrong…
In your answer you called the child by Name --> Maybe you want to have more a Smartwatch.
Race S is a purebred sport watch. If you use route navi on a Suunto, you will notice on a short view wherever you are. If you loose the track, may you have to scroll zoom Level with a short Crone rotation and you will easily find the right direction back to the track, or target. Objects such as buildings are still visible on the map.
If I really get lost, I use the app and draw a route to my desired destination.
Hmm, for what is the street name useful for if you are in an unknown city? Normally there are also signs on the Streets, I would prefer to read those sings as a microscopic slim text on this small display.
I’m sorry for my bad English. -
Street Names would be great, and the ability to turn off etc.
But for me the most important thing is the response and clarity of the maps.
On the Suunto Vertical (I haven’t tried any other Suunto watch) the maps are fantastic for responsiveness.Extra data may slow this down.
