Hi guys, yesterday I ran 76km long ultra race. After maybe 6 hours my watch suddenly restarted by itself, i didn’t even touch the device. So all of my recorded data was lost.
I started the activity again and even it took really long time before the gps fix (maybe 15minutes) so I wasn’t able to navigate according the route, it worked fine afterwards.
If you ask I use both MC and SA on iOS but bluetooth was turned completely off on the phone so I guess it’s not a cause of the issue. My watch were in custom mode (MC) for trail running with good gps and other power saving options on (except the display sleep). Thanks to STRYD I have all the race recorded but without GPS. I can live with that but I think this shouldn’t happen.
Do you have some idea what could cause this issue?

And one suggestion - wouldn’t it be possible to save some temporary recording of the data, let’s say maybe every hour or two hours (for longer lasting activities) during the ongoing activity? Because if you run for 6 hours and you lose all the data (and you don’t even know why) it could be at least a little bit upsetting.

@Zdeněk-Hruška I had this happen a very long time ago when the Spartan was first released during a race, I am sorry this is happening again. I find this not acceptable and unclear why it is occurring again. Since that time I ran many races and long runs with my SSU and have not had a problem. I think it is random, I would send in a support ticket to Suunto.\

Are you using the most recent firmware?
Because I think this was a bug existent in older FW versions and should not happen anymore…

@Egika yes of course, most recent fw. It hadn’t happened to me before not even during longer ultras. Hopefully it won’t happen again 🙂

              @Zdeněk-Hruška I got a restart with a S9 the day I upgraded to the latest S9 firmware.
              Something is happening definitely.
Do open a support ticket so they can narrow it down and fix it.

@Brad_Olwin I have run lot of longer races with my Spartans and it had never happened not even with an older FW. Ok, I’ll try to contact support and will see if they can offer any help:)
But still it would be great if there was some kind of a backup during long activities. Because in current state you never know. You run for many hours and suddenly all data is gone.

@Zdeněk-Hruška One thing to try is reinstalling the firmware. Might be worth doing and see if you can get another restart. You could have bad hardware or there could be a recent bug in the latest firmware. If it is a bug, others should see it.

Did you carry your watch and have also the app installed? Would be worth to know that and pass that to support as well.

It would be great when SSU is on latest FW like the S9’s that will align soon, to check this issue again. There is a lot of work done for the SSU till it’s last update.

Welcome to the forum btw! 😄

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Thanks!:) Yeah the app is installed on my iphone but bluetooth was definitely turned off. But I use the app if that was your question. Like I said, it happened to me for the first time (hopefully for the last time as well). I will definitely try it with the new firmware and I am really looking forward for that! I was really upsett when it happened - you know I was tired and I was working really hard, you don´t want to deal with such issues in that state of mind and body 🙂

@Zdeněk-Hruška the question was whether you has you phone with you on the race.
The hypothesis is that the app on the phone may be interacting with the watch during the activity and may be causing some side effects

@Yannis-Belouris I understand but all wireless connections were turned off on my phone, so I don’t know how it could communicate. If I turn off the Bluetooth there is no way app could connect to watch, right? 🙂

@Zdeněk-Hruška just checking. My case was similar.
Let see what suunto makes of it.

@Yannis-Belouris Of course, no problem. I wonder whether it is strictly Spartan issue or S9 is affected as well

@Zdeněk-Hruška As for the S9, I have run a 100 mile and 100k race with it this year as well as some other long activities. I have not had a crash.

@Brad_Olwin I have done similar races with my Spartans. It was ok until this Saturday with “only” 6 hours of running:) So it definitely isn’t something that would bother me all the time. Except the previous FW Spartan issue (when the watch was randomly showing “arrow of death”) I’ve had no big problems with my watch. I love them and use them every day. So it really surprised me, when it randomly restarted during the race. But maybe it won’t happen again. And maybe the new FW will fix that. Who knows 🙂
