Even if that was the easiest thing todo there are other priorities there and there is a feature request voting system that could change the prio from a business perspective.
I just asked a real question - this was not used as an argument, otherwise I’d have said: “It should be not so hard to implement!”
I am also in software development and I also hate such estimations.And Your answer with battery consumption and PRIOs is the exact the explanation I was hoping for!

It would even change white to black depending on the time (sunrise/sunset)
