No information from Suunto Vertical watch when changing direction during navigation
-
What I am doing wrong.
I have a problem with navigation on this watch. I walk with poles because I have back problems. When I set myself up for example for Nordic Walking and choose to follow a set route, I have a problem when navigating. When I come to a turn about 95-96m before I get the information from the watch that there will be a turn, but not at the point of the turn. What could be wrong with the navigation settings? Is it possible to change this somehow? It’s a problem for me because I’ve already happened to get lost a few times and because of my back problems I’m in pain afterwards because I’m making up a lot of ground. I would be very grateful for your help.

@neverhood that is the way this route navigation works on a suunto watch sorry. 100m before the Turn it give a beep and Vibration, you have to look when the 100m ends. Cause after your Turn the next Turn info in the future comes… That is how it works. Not specially good - but a navigation like this is better than a watch without navigation. But if you follow your track you see on the map when you have to Turn.

You aren’t doing anything wrong, I think Suunto have always had it set like this. I don’t personally have any issues with it and I actually find it better being notified 100m before rather than when I arrive at the turn. It gives me time to scroll through the map screen if I’m not already on it, and if I’m running on trails or it’s unclear which turn/path I should be taking I just zoom right in to make sure I stay on route

@neverhood I turn off turn by turn as I do not need to be notified. I can look at the watch and see the direction I need to go. I do not like having the constant vibration for turns when out on the trails.

This is what I do to, I don’t have it enabled as I find the alerts distracting and even more so if I’m running in a town or city with numerous turns

@Redbird : many times discussed. Almost everybody agree that the way it actually works is not the best.
For now it has not evolved.
I also use navigation a lot, for biking, hiking.
Since I use maps with the vertical, I don’t use turn by turn alerts anymore, but I also would be please to see improvements with the way it works.
the most annoying thing to me is especially the fact that the second alert (which tells the next point) is precisely « hiding map » at the turning point.
I’d rather have a first alert « y » meters before the turn, and a second « x » seconds (based on speed, so distance would be different depending on which activity you’re practicing) before the turning point, and then have the map displayed when arriving to turn.
The next turn alert could also be displayed few meter after turning point.
Or, like you said, having indications as an overlay on map would be awesome. -
Thank you for your answers.
I’ve only used car navigation so far and it’s probably habits I need to get rid of.I have one more question. When I create a route in the Suunto app on my watch, I don’t get any notifications. Is there something I need to do?
Fortunately, I use plotaroute and then I have notifications, but it is annoying that the Suunto app does not export notifications after synchronising the route with the watch. -
@neverhood
The problem is not really the syncing of turns from outside sources to Suuntoapp and the watch, it is the way the watch is managing the notifications : at a turn, there is a special point with indication that there is something to notify. And the watch is warning 100m before it, and nothing else, and then it is focused on the next turn.
Whatever you can do with plotaroute or komoot or any other routes, if the watch mechanisms are not changed, it will stay the same. -
@neverhood You need to turn on turn by turn, it is not on by default, when creating a route.

I’ve never created a route on Suunto App but via Kamoot turn by turn is the default. Strange it is the opposite ️
I also turn the turn by turn off. -
@Audaxjoe you should try native route creation with SA !
I’ve tried komoot a few times. SA is so much easy to me ! (Except maybe if you are using existing routes in komoot). -

I’ve tried komoot a few times. SA is so much easy to me ! (Except maybe if you are using existing routes in komoot).I think the issue is activity. My main need for a route is cycling, normally in the range of 150-200k. SA isn’t the easiest on a phone for these distances! Or not in my experience anyway It could be user error…
-
@Audaxjoe so for you need I can understand why you use komoot ! (Even if SA works well also for cycling to me )
-
@Audaxjoe Use a tablet or computer.

How do you get the SA on your computer? Probably a stupid question but oh well
-
@MiniForklift On my Mac SA runs great. On Windows 11 I believe Android apps also run.
-
@Brad_Olwin I do the same as you, I also turn off turn-by-turn, but I understand that this is not a solution to what the colleague is asking.
In the end, as the turn-by-turn works in such an unhelpful way, it ends up being a useless feature. It’s a pity.

@enriqueescoms when I had no maps (with A3p, S9b…), first there was no turn by turn. When it arrived on S9B, I used it but with the same limitation than now.
With the SV and maps, If find it less usefull.
When I still use it, I often remove most turning points, only to keep the key ones on my way (complex crossings for examples…). But I only use it as a warning for map looking ! -
@Tieutieu Yes, I do much the same. Maybe if the turn-by-turn worked differently I would use it more. Maybe, I don’t know.
