Is the Vertical as sub-standard as it seems?

Egika right so basically you are implying that the rest of the market has it all wrong and should take Suunto’s lead. Quite a heavy dose of implicit bias right there! So to be scientific, Suunto is happy to generate €35+ million in loss in 2022.
Wow that’s a lot of added value.
-
@zhang965 ouch!
-
@Egika
and that is why Suunto leverage the same underlying algorithms as they want gimmicks too…
Guess you have never read the white papers hence comment that they have no underlying scientific basis. Sure I am sure some haven’t but the vast majority do when you go through the whitepaper.
Guess you haven’t seen the +500 scientific studies that they are currently taking part in.
And what was a really interesting when reading the article was about how scientific the brands are getting - I remember the article discussing how Garmin, Whoop and Oura - funny I don’t remember anything about Suunto…and how heavily underlined their metrics are in science and how much research they are doing to underline the metrics and to help other sections withing the medical health and fitness professions.
Sure some things are gimmicks - take SPO2 - massive gimmick. You can even take ECG and consider that a massive gimmick on smartwatches as 1 lead vs 12 leads so cannot pick up host of conditions - yet despite that sometimes those gimmicks are useful to some people.
And sure a feature like climbpro sounds like an absolute gimmick - until you use it and find out just how useful it can be. -

ouch! finally we found a true suunto target audience!

Who would have ever thought that a clickbait title like this would have ended up in such an abundance of great content.

I don’t know, maybe you?

@isazi pure gold

@zhang965 swim drills is still not scientifically proven hence Suunto hasn’t implemented it yet on SV or 9PP

Only good for the ambit series https://www.suunto.com/fr-fr/Assistance/Assistance-produit/suunto_ambit3_sport/suunto_ambit3_sport/caracteristiques/natation/
-
@André-Faria the ambit series seemed to be real beasts… I never have seen one in action, but they seemed to have a lot of great features. Wasn’t it considered a step backwards when the Spartan/Suunto 9 came out?
-
@ChrisA yep
-
@ChrisA good watches, first one was a mess.
-
@ChrisA
ambit were awesome watches and still are, depending on someone’s requirements.
they were ahead of time and technology IMO and with ambit apps there were almost infinite possibilities.
I was hesitant when upgrading to S9B back then but it was the better watch despite the missing apps.
S+ fill that gap in a structured way and with Vertical we’ve received an awesome tool I would not trade in anytime soon! -
My ambit 3 was just an awesome watch…unless the multiples baro sensor failures, especially in cold conditions. I never have regretted the upgrade to the S9b expect for gps accuracy.
The SV checks everything I need !
-
The Ambit 3 was a cool watch… I liked it very much. Writing own Apps was a nice feature… I missed it after changing to Spartan.
-
Ambit 3 - Awesome
Spartan - Meh
S9B - I thought this was as good as it gets
SV - As good as it gets -
@Brad_Olwin
Thank you for the helpful commentary. The 9PP has the best OHR for you. How does the 9 Peak’s OHR compare to the 9PP? -

Every opinion you will see here will be different.
For me the ambit was the gold standart, precision and easy of use. 5 button layout, possibility of apps with more than one running.
Even on some blogs you see the ambit 3 still being spoken about ([5krunner](https://the5krunner.com/2023/05/04/sports-watch-gets-best-ever-gps-track/ , [Montrecardiogps 1](https://www.montre-cardio-gps.fr/les-montres-gps-de-lutmb-2022-de-fenix-7x-a-ambit3-peak/, 2)).
For me Spartan was meh. The S9 on the begining, I recall seeing quite a bit of issues on the begining, but with the time I guess they become really better.
What makes them (s9b) even better is they have full compability with suunto app and continue to get updates, making a good companion.
But this is offtopic, and worths zero to talk since suunto won’t work on any support for the ambits, and needs to focus on the actual range, because like every brand, they need cash entering by the salles of the new models.
Most people that still uses an ambit already bought a new device, which I believe for quite a bit of people, after the movescount fiasco were to choose another brand - and yes I know they did what was the best, and even provided a 30% coupon, which was welcome, but that moove took a lot of trust that people had on suunto. Hope with the recent issues with vertical and updates they have the resources to solve it asap and bring again the trust on the brand.
Because honestly speaking I never saw this forum so on fire…and I am not sure they sold so many verticals as other watches…
Time will tell. But with so many owner changes for sure it is not easy for the brand nor for the people that work there. -
@André-Faria I cannot really tell if Vertical was a commercial success but can abstract a lot by the fact that 3 month used Vertical Solar can be had for 50% discount in my local classified. On eBay people are expecting the standard Vertical to be close to €300. This is the reality outside this echo-chamber.

Wow, where are you based?
I check often on leboncoin (france) and vinted, and the best I have seen is like 500 for the solar and still not selling. On the other hand, strangely enough the S9B series remain expensive used (150-200 plus eur)…almost the price of new (maybe people didn’t check suunto new pricing). Spartans also maintain their prices to about 80-130eur. And for the Ambits lot of variaton, from 30 to 100 or more.
