Software Firmware Update Suunto Vertical?!

Hey Community, did someone know when the next Software Update comes to solve all bugs from SUUNTO verrical watch? Suunto says perhaps in this month. Other news about that?

@GiPFELKiND probably the most info you get about that are the rumours in this forum. Suunto doesnāt disclose their update schedule.

@GiPFELKiND I really hope that there will be an update soonā¦ I canāt rely on the software yet. for example today for the first time I couldnāt see a map while walkingā¦ I had to save the activity. I then switched off the Suunto+ apps and did a soft reset (30 seconds). After that everything went againā¦ but it was very annoying! I hope they get it under control soonā¦I mean 800 EUR

@Sascha-Domres I also have some issuesā¦ some are little bugs, but if we put them all togetherā¦ this watch becomes to much expensive for the software qualityā¦

13 days since last full charge, 40 hours of activities (300km, 10K D+), trail running, hikking, climbing, biking and MTBā¦
Perhaps I have settings that help (no notification, few apps used for now)ā¦
But, at the end : 0 crash, 0 blocking issue.
It is certain that software needs optimisation ; but this watch is still just awesome. -
@Tieutieu thatās great! I will be a little more patient and wait for the next software update to see if they are really trying to fix thingsā¦
If we want Suunto to thrive, they need to get things done rightā¦ If something donāt work, remove it from the software, improve it, and then add it againā¦ It will be better for everyone! -
I have compiled my list of glitches/bugs after 23 days using Suunto Vertical.
High level:
- After first upgrade: impossible to configure custom power intensity zones. Locked in the menu, solved with soft reset.
- After first upgrade: impossible to configure custom rythm intensity zones. Locked in the menu, solved with soft reset. So, after first upgrade I had to perform two soft resets to make the watch workā¦
- The watch rebooted during activity when looking/moving map in the map screen view (āonlyā happened once).
Medium level:
- Ghost SuuntoPlus Apps: Suuntoplus App configuration and management has a random behavior. Sometimes you select the App in the watch and doesnāt appear in the activity. Sometimes you deselect them and still appear in the watch. Sometimes you select them and the App screen in the activity is black but the App is working and saving data. So, until you start and activity you donāt know if the SuuntoApp conf is stable and working. Itās not confortable to stop and reconfigure on the fly.
- SuuntoPlus Apps with errors: S+ āTP HRā, āStrava REā. Data offered by those S+ Apps is very different to data offered by TP, Strava and SuuntoApp, so those Apps are useless.
- GPS signal lost: if SV loses GPS signal (and no movement) for a short period of time the result is strange track and big ghost movement.
Minor level:
- Compass calibration almost every day or when entering map screen (not happening with S9P nor S9B).
- Compass not oriented when entering compass widget, solved with compass calibration (not happening with S9P nor S9B).
- Recovery hours data/widget not working OK.
- Resources data
- Outdoor altitude VS SpO2 altitude: show different altitudes althogh watch has been moveless during night.
- Postactivity summary: hidden graph left side
- Training summary widget: weekly report graph lost?
- Map turns during activity are slower when in movement.
- Full charging time is 2h?
Feature request:
- Wider Intensity ring: S9P has a wider intensity ring and is easier to read in a 1.2" screen.
- No power intensity zones: I can configure the zones in the watch and watch shows a time in zone summary but I canāt select train with power intensity zones, only HR or rythm.
- Weather forecast widget, only 8h? It would be interesting to be able to see at least 10 or 12 hours to plan the next day just before to go to bed.
- Flashlight: It would be very nice to be able to turn on the light pushing the 2 yellow buttons.
- Watchface: baro ant temp graph
- Optic HR measurement only at night (sleep hours, now you can only choose 24h or 0h).
For those not having issues, perhaps they havenāt still found them or luckily really they donāt have these issues
Hope many of the bugs (or at least the more important ones) will be solved with next software and wonāt be dragged to future software releases.

@RGomes this is something that happens already in testing. With features released to production, well that is difficult because users will complain (rightly so). Example: Strava Segments were released to public, had bugs, they were disabled so Suunto could improve them. It is what you suggest, and a good way to not have broken features, but some users complained that they bought something and that something was taken away from them.

In my opinion people are expecting a flawless product with a million features totally tailored to their needs. Never realising that this is impossible to do.I think Suunto does the right thing. Stick to their beliefs and listening to their customers. Even actively gathering information through surveys and this forum.
Yes, bugs are inevitable. As long as they are taken seriously and repaired some day, thatās the best you can do as a company.

You mean poor suckers who counted on a watch not to crash and reboot in the middle of their long run? Or to see those much advertised offline maps once you spend half a day downloading them? Or perhaps have Suunto+ apps that donāt display placeholder labels and drain battery like thereās no tomorrow? Or maybe have a compass that doesnāt need calibration every single time? Hell, what about an EPOC recovery timer that counts down hours!
How dare these unwashed peasants demand basic heavily advertised and promoted features to work! Ungrateful bastardsā¦
Customers these days! You charge them mere peanuts, $830 plus shipping and tax and they want a working product! You canāt get a mere appetizer at the three-star Michelin restaurant for this amount, and they want a working product!

Some day? Look, I used to be known in this forum as one of the biggest Suunto fanboys, but I canāt ignore the fact that with every passing iteration the amount of bugs far outstrips the number of features added. Suunto really did Garmin this time around and managed to break even seemingly unrelated stuff.
Like how do you break a recovery timer, for Peteās sake?
We had one widget that was really slow to load on S9 and S9P ā heart rate. Resources were also kind of meh. S9PP sped things up considerably. Not quite Garmin/COROS level of snappiness but acceptable. With Vertical, you swipe between widgets and can literally see the digital paint dry. Thatās assuming the widget doesnāt get stuck half screen, end up as blank, or crash your watch.
And now we have a āhot fixā that by the time it rolls out is going to be anything but āhotā. Lukewarm, maybe? Room temperature? And yes, I understandā¦ Suunto has process. It has those famous field testers. People for whom offline maps work flawlessly, widgets scroll blazingly fast, the S+ apps are on point, and the activity recording is rock stable.
Iām sorry. I received my replacement Vertical yesterday. And I had more problems with it in the past 24 hours than with all Garmin, Suunto, and COROS watches from the past several years combined.
The growing list of issues voiced up in this forum for a single watch mere days following a release arenāt some spoiled brats nagging about minor obscure edge case. Itās a testament to ever slipping standards and a product that could have benefited from an upward of half a year of additional development.

At the opposite I didnāt had any crashes along last weeks. Does that mean that Vertical is perfect ?

yes consumption of battery is a bit higher with one app, more important with two. And I had to stop and start the watch just once, to solve the no maps problem. Thatās the only Ā«Ā issuesĀ Ā» I had.Well, I guess if youāre so disappointed you should try to get your money back !
Whatever : nobody must forget that, most of the time, we donāt really need a watch to enjoy sport and nature.

@NickK I agree with you. I owned suunto 9 baro, 9 peak, and ambit 3 in the past. Yes, the watch works great for some (no crash, no reboot, no soft reset). Congratulations. Unfortunately, for some, it does crash, reboot, soft reset, for unknown reasons. The fact that the bugs do not happen to some , do not mean they donāt exist. For some who do not frequent this forum (like my friend who bought one vertical and returned it), the experience is way far less than stellar, not the suunto he hoped for.
I still havenāt purchased mine yet (heck, it is not yet available in my country and we are all not sure if it even ever available, judging how the distributors here all seem to stay away from the brand, or gave up after short period). I do am looking to purchase from amazon, but iām waiting and lurking in this forum to see if the hotfix will solve the crash issue, at least. That is the real killer bug. In my friend word: āi donāt expect suunto to have thousands of features like garmin, but i expect at least that it does not crash from just simple usageā.

@Tieutieu Unfortunately for suunto, thatās exactly what my friend did. return it and get his money back, and bought garmin (yes, despite the many stories in the past that garmin also have bugs, it at least did not crash on him during activity), and he was so pissed (with the suunto crash), he told everyone to stay away from suunto. It certainly does not help suunto, in the country where suunto is already struggling to even try to exist (Polar i suspect will be 2nd brand to go away here)

@Kk2n-Kk my point is that we - here - are there to share and help. Most of the time only users with issues express themselves. Does it reflect reality ? I am probably very or too much tolerant with issues ?
Again, didnāt had anything that avoid me to enjoy the Vertical : and Iāve made all my closest friends around buy one ! And guess what : theyāre all so pleased with it !When you consider that perhaps less than 10% of standard customers make the effort of reading the manual, I guess I understand the Ā«Ā buy / return it / buy another brandĀ Ā» behaviour. Some of my friends could have been there if I had not shown them some tips. And it goes the same with the tons of tests, reviews and features list available, that everyone wants, but at the end leads to Ā«Ā why is this not in my watchĀ ? Ā».
But donāt misunderstand me : I completly agree that issues are known and must be corrected asap.
Most of all I enjoy sport a lot, thatās what matters to me. My Watch is just a tool. And I love Suunto for way more things than functionnalities. -
No major issues with mine, I love it. I was stubbornly believing that it would fall short of my expectations and after a few weeks Iād have my trusty old S9B back on my wristā¦ but that didnāt happen
Battery is amazing, legibility whilst running is probably the best of any sports/GPS watch Iāve owned (and Iāve had most of the main contenders), accuracy is damned near perfect and size wise it hits the sweet spot. Sorry I canāt think of anything to complain about

Iām with you on that. Iām somewhat of a collector of watches and my favourite ones - the ones that resonate with me are the pieces that serve a purpose and are built for the job. Suunto definitely ticks that box and I already feel like I can rely on my Vertical when things get hairy

Do you have a family? A day job? How long is your commute? Because I wish I could find upward of two hours a day, every day, week after week for my endeavors. I suppose I need something to better manage my timeā¦ If only there was a solid Suunto product that worked for that, really!
ā¦ And when I do find a spare moment to get out for a run or throw a few kettlebells around or hike a neighboring state park, I want my watch to perform as advertised. Is it too much to ask?

No worries in that department. Amazon makes returns really easy. They even send a UPS guy with the label directly to your door. I know because this isnāt the first Vertical Iām sending back.

@NickK Itās just a watch made in Finland dude. Chill. Not perfect, but I personally really like the small in house brand regardless of being frustrated that things arenāt working properly from time to time.
Itās a choice to be here on the forums. Choice to buy a Suunto or not. No one is making you do either, but you do sound kind of sarcastic and unhappy. Itās not a go buy a garminā¦its a āif you arenāt happyā¦i get itā¦choose another brand then?ā
Disconnect and go for a run without any electronics. Thatās what I do. Reminds you of the difference between need and want, and whatās really important.
I trust Suunto is trying their best as a company. I donāt think they were trying to deceive anyone, but sorry you feel deceived.
