Adjust altitude whilst in a move (#2)
-
@wiseseb the question is: is the offset so big, that you need this feature.
As FusedAlti is super reliable, any offset at the beginning of an activity will be leveled out after 15mins or so. After this the watch will continuously adjust the altitude with the GPS reference.
There is no AI involved here, it is pure GPS measurements and some low pass filtering (plus ruling out bad measurements).
What is your use case that FusedAlti cannot hadle it? -
@egika
Thanks for your reply. But i am not asking you to analyse my data and try to convince me this is not a necessary feature.As a customer, i had this ability before, i just ask Suunto to have it back since it is not a new thing though FusedAlti helps a lot.
That’s a matter of habit of usage, all customer do no have the same usage of their watch, mine not same as yours. -
@wiseseb ok. I actually like to question an “if should be this way, because it has always been like this” statement.
This is about progress in technology, why not talk about the actual use case instead of old functions?But if you don’t like to discuss, then I leave your request here uncommented from now.

@egika
I don’t have the precise data to show you.
Yesterday i was hiking in countryside. Hence indeed, no big need of correct altitude. I did not adjust it before start.
During the hike, we went up a gentle hill and there was an indication up this hill.
On my screens (i was using the “walk sport mode”) i had not the indication of the altitude, only the altitude profile with D+ / D-, so i cannot say what was the difference. I just wanted to adjust since i had a local indication in order for the datas to be precise.
In fact, that was more a trial for mountain hiking summer activities.
The feature exist on the watch (but not available when you are in activity) it’s so frustrating. -
@wiseseb
I keep it short: first, @Egika is very experienced and simply wanted to help you.
second: my advice, do what you did yesterday and stop thinking about playing around with altitude.
FusedAlti does that for you. If you adjust it manually before your activity, FusedAlti is deactivated and you will regret that during and after your activity.Enjoy the progress of technologies and improvements Suunto brings us

@freeheeler @Egika ,
OK, i apologise.
Let’s take a new start and a peaceful discussion.Can you explain me clearly (because i did not find it in the Suunto FAQ or manuals) the way FusedAlti is interacting with the manuel setup ?
Is there a different behaviour during an activity or during normal use ?
What about influence of low battery mode (Endurance / Ultra / Tour) which reduces the GPS tracking, during the activity ?
I am confused, but you write that FusedAlti will be deactivated if i adjust altitude manually ?
All what is done automatically by the watch is not clear, that’s why i am concerned about manual features.
-
@wiseseb
different battery modes do not effect FusedAlti afaik.
You can set alti manually maximum 15mins before your activity… but it doesn’t really make sense.
but you can try it: set something really wrong, wait 20mins, start an activity for more that 15mins and wait for magic to happen. -
Your watch will automatically calibrate the altitude when you start a new activity.
IT will also do it during.
No need to calibrate manually

@freeheeler @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos
Thanks for the trick, i will try.I try to summarise my understanding:
*/ FusedAlti is always in function (activity recording or not) and an auto-adjustment is made about every 15min (which guarantee the altitude is always accurate)
*/ Hence, if i make a bad manual update and start directly an activity, i will have bad datas during the first +/-15min of recording.Can you confirm i understand correctly?
Last questions:
During an activity, is the auto adjustment (made by FusedAlti) based upon GPS data + barometric data ?
How is it reliable during mountain hiking and weather conditions changing ? -
Only during activity Fused Alti works. During all other times no.
It should track it ok though but it can get skewed.During activity it always runs based on both data (baro + GPS) and even in really bad conditions (pressure changes) it should work just fine. That is because ie prehaps the pressure is changing but you are not moving or the GPS altitude does not move etc
Its much more improved than ambits

@dimitrios-kanellopoulos
@freeheeler
@EgikaThank you all.
And my apologies again if I sounded aggressive. -
@wiseseb No worries man
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos
@freeheeler
@EgikaJust to confirm that I tried and was gratefully convinced this feature just works fine.
Even with a voluntary manual wrong adjustment before the activity, as you all said, FusedAlti just get it correct.Perfect.
Thanks to you all (and my apologies again for being so directive and not open-minded).
Congrats to Suunto
