limited faces
-
Hello everyone.
I just returned from Japan where I found the Race titanium in the shop at the standard price of €549. I bought it.
After years of experiences with Garmin and, most recently, Huawei ultimate, I also wanted to try the Suunto world.
I’m not a hiker and use it mostly as a smartwatch and occasionally for some indoor sports activities.
Because I’m going to Uganda in January for a gorilla trek and safari, I wanted to try a watch with offline maps.
I won’t make comparisons with Garmin and Huawei.
It seems to me to be a well-made watch from a qualitative point of view. From the software point of view I expected better.
But let’s get to my question…
Is it possible that the Race only has 10 faces preloaded?
This seems like a big limitation to me, such a beautiful watch to wear every day and there is no possibility of downloading other dials.
Do you confirm or am I the one who hasn’t found the solution? -
@Ninosan Suunto has chosen the strategy of developing sports watches. The smart watch functionality is very minimal as you have noticed. There are no more watch faces, although I’ve heard rumours of some enhanced customisation is being developed.
Btw, tomorrow there’s going to be a new sw version launch. Charge up your watch and stay tuned.

@BrunoH
Bruno, thanks for the reply.
I understand Suunto’s strategy but it is also true that with any sports or smart watch you are forced to keep it on your wrist 24 hours a day to have reliable data, such as number of steps, sleep, etc…
Consequently, if I have to keep it on my wrist every day for 24 hours, Suunto… tries to make it more pleasant.
Suunto has done an excellent job on the aesthetics, certainly much more beautiful than the Garmin (which in some respects is more intelligent), but then it doesn’t offer adequate faces to wear it on every occasion.
I really hope a software update improves this. -
Hello!
I had in the past Coros Vertix watch, than I had Apple Watch 8.
I just bought Suunto Race Titanium few days ago.
Yeah, it’s quite boring to have such a short number of watch faces. I would appreciate to have more analog faces and to have some on a white background. All the watch faces now are on a black background. Would be great to add more faces … Also think about to add to the Suunto Application a possibility to change the info that appears on the watch faces as it is with Apple watch. It’s fancy!
In general the Suunto Race watch is very good!
Good look! -
@Kalin-Trifonov as the Race has an amoled screen, watch faces with white background would consume much more power and reduce the lifespan of the display.
-
@halajos I know, but it is a matter of personal choice. If someone prefers longer battery life, than he will choose some face with a black background …
In general faces with a white background looks very, very good. -
@Kalin-Trifonov it is not simply battery life, it is screen lifetime too.

I see it a little differently. For me it’s about available functionality and information. I don’t need dozens of pretty watch faces but I would like the ones we have to be more useful. I shouldn’t have to go to different watch faces to get different but related information. The main watch face should give me my resources for instance. To get it I have to access a widget or a different watch face. It’s the only major piece of information missing from the main watch face and it is related to the information on that face. It’s a weird omission that can’t be attributed to screen burn in, lifetime or battery life… I propose a widget system in the Suunto app to allow users to choose which information they want to display/access from any given watch face by addition. So, each watch face has it’s defaults and then users can add more. Plus, there are some stats/widgets that really should have their own watch face, like the Progress widget. I’d love access to at least some of that information, like my ramp rate, without having to dig in to a widget. Also Why is there no barometric pressure or temperature display on the watch outside of the widget? It’s an ABC watch. There is the altimeter on the vertical watch face, there is a compass watch face and a compass widget, but no barometric pressure or sensor temp readout available on any watch face. How about location? I could go on but I think I’ve made my point.

@TitaniumDave very good points!!!
-
@TitaniumDave super valid points!
I am sure Suunto is aware of these as well and working hard to improve the situation! -
@TitaniumDave very good points!!
The pressure issue is one of the first things I noted in the Vertical and Race. How is it possible that I can’t add baro info to the watch face in a ABC watch?
-
Absoltely agree with you in all points. Thank you for this note.

I mostly use only two watchfaces. Vertical Solar is my favourite + sometimes use Race default one. More than new watchfaces, I wish more customize of current one. For example I can’t have Weather + Battery widget (its reserved to left icon) just like for example steps + altitude to right. Cant have Weather on left and battery on right which is weird. Also Solar vertion got solar harvest icon and steel vertical got altitude which seems more useful.

How about watch faces based on activities? A GMT face with a 24 spoke bike wheel, each spoke corresponding to an hour for the GMT hand. What about a watch face laid out like a bike computer or a sport mode? I would love a sport mode layout watch face with any number of test complications up to 7! A chronograph style watch face based on running? Maybe use hands stylized as laces or medals. Maybe have a chapter ring stylized like a track? What about a digital stop watch type watch face, basically a digital watch face with a blocky font, kind of like the Ocean watch face, with hours, minutes, seconds and tenths? What about an old fashioned analog odometer style watch face kind of like the alarm setting interface on the watch?
My point is that, Suunto could make stylized, interesting watch faces without using movie or TV characters, or product logos or even high resolution graphics. Suunto could just lean in to what they do.95 sport modes? 95+ watch face possibilities?

@TitaniumDave well
