Map source?

Did Suunto switch their on-watch map styles at some point since the Vertical’s release, or is it coming with the Race? I tried the Vertical upon release, and one of the things I didn’t like was that the map style on the watch was different from the app. For trail running, the app’s use of bright green lines for trails is absolutely amazing for quickly identifying possible routes, but on the Vertical they were gray (or some other washed-out color). From the videos of the Race, it looks like trails are green, so maybe the app and watch maps are now better aligned?

@bobson the Race allows for more colors, so the map looks different, but it’s still OpenStreetMap data.
-
@isazi Aha! Well that’s a major selling point for me, then—it really bugged me that the map styles were not aligned, which meant that a route I had planned on the app looked different on the watch. Thanks for that bit of info.

@bobson I’m sure some people in the forum can post screen comparisons of the map between the two watches. I would do it myself, but I’m quite bad at taking pictures (especially of screens).
-
@isazi I would love to see some one-to-one comparisons if anyone is able to do that!

@bobson some place in the neighborhood in SA and on Race:

Funny that contour lines are different.
Super interesting comparison, thanks @Egika -
@taziden actually this is in virtually flat Hamburg. I wonder why there are contour lines at all. 🤪
-
@Egika Thanks, that’s really useful and looks so much better than the Vertical maps.
-
Can you see more details (i.e. trail markings) at higher zoom levels than the Vertical, given the higher resolution?
Thanks in advance!
-
@elliott the map detail and data is the same.
Just color rendering is different.
-
@Egika Thanks! Shame no higher zoom level than 500m yet, but hopefully that’ll come to both watches in time
-
@Egika Under sunlight the viewing is different

How are turn-by-turn directions handled on Race? Other Suunto watches have a pretty weird way as in notify all turns in one go if they fall within 100m, i.e. if for instance you have 3 turns within the next 100m, it will give you all the notifications for them rather than wait for the first turn and then tell about the next turn. This has been a pain to use in even the SV.

-
@altcmd it’s the same.
-
@altcmd the only change is that you use the crown to zoom, everything else is the same. Software on Race and Vertical is basically the same.
-
-
@altcmd with my SV and maps introduction, I almost doesn’t use turn by turn anymore. But I understand your point of view, as I find myself that by turn is not handled very well for now.

@Egika The choice of color for the trails could be better. Trails are rendered in not sufficiently dark green, which doesn’t seem to produce good contrast, especially when on light green background.
