Topo map details on S7
-
Hi,
Anyone out there has compared S7 vs Garmin Fenix 6 stock maps and which one has the better details and clearer contour lines?
Thanks in advance

@BinoWorld-UK I think they’re both pretty good. Suunto uses MapBox, not sure what Garmin uses. I’ve seen a friend’s Fenix and the maps look really good on it also.

@Jeffrey-Tillack thanks mate. I personally think Suunto map is great it has contour lines for navigation and the screen being oled it’s crisp and details are clear.

Can only comment based on UK as I know that the Garmin maps can differentiate quite a bit based on the area, though you do have the ability to download maps from alternative sources and add layers (was reading about a guy who added a map layer that showed all the drinking fountains for his local park that he liked to run in) if the maps in your area do not show enough detail (see TalkyToaster https://shop.talkytoaster.me.uk/osm-map-comparison - has map comparision on his free versions vs Garmin and verse his paid versions - also images for free OS maps - all of which can easily be loaded onto your Garmin device if the standard maps aren’t up to what you need).
F6x didn’t have as much detail as the E2 as it simply doesn’t have the resolution, but yes its possible to see contour lines. But overall Garmin has more detail as it shows a lot more local detail - think google maps i.e. showing parking business etc - in fact a lot of support requests have recently gone in to request the ability to filter a lot of this info out in a busy town in some areas it is just too much detail.
Take this as an example (this is an Epix map image )… -
@Jamie-BG thanks for tip to talkytoaster very interesting indeed.
I had a look at the website and it’s a very good proportion considering the prices are cheaper than Garmin payable maps. There was a mention of not duplicating maps? Does that mean whatever is already installed on Garmin needs to come off first? Thanks

@BinoWorld-UK
not sure re non-duplicating maps - but think he is probably referencing more around his own maps.In terms of Garmin maps no you don’t have to uninstall - you should be able to select what you want to use and disable what you don’t want to use - sorry can’t 100% confirm that is still there -was on the F6x but map set up is slightly different on F7/E2 in that all in the region now, and haven’t yet downloaded a different region so can’t tell if you can still toggle them on/off as requried.
