Indoor rowing and distance

I have a JLL indoor rowing machine and have recently been testing my Suunto 7 whilst working out. The strange thing is that my watch records almost exactly half the distance that my rowing machine does. It is set to Indoor Rowing and I wasn’t expecting it to record distance at all. So how is it measuring the distance? Not GPS as I’m indoors. Is it counting strokes and estimating stroke length? I can change the total distance after the exercise but the splits are still wrong. There doesn’t seem to be any way to configure this. Is there a setting hidden away somewhere?
