Energy consumption of dark vs light display background

What uses less battery: Dark or light display background? How much difference does that roughly make during an activity?
Since the display in dark when powered off, I assume, making it light/white consumes energy. Hence, light background could be more demanding …

@simon it doesn’t matter. It’s only relevant for OLED displays.
