GPS wrong Max Speed when pausing?
-
Hello!
I created this thread to try to fix some of my moves/activities. But looking into these activities I found a potencial poblem on some of these, not in all:
1)- Can be possible that by pausing an activity cause errors on the speed? Always in clear sky, at outdoor, maybe I paused the activity for 10 minutes and resume again, this result in a wrong Max Speed of 80km/h on bicycle or other. NOTE: maybe this affirmation is wrong, but is one common factor that I found to some of these, not of all activites.
2)- Other common factor was that in some of these activites I moved under a small bridge of 120mts wide, this not take more than 20 seconds riding the bike or in inline skate at not less than 25km/h, but this can cause that the GPS signal is not received and create some peaks on the activities? The strange is that sometimes, passing under the same bridge, the activity is correct.
To solve this I moved on Location Accuracy from Best to Good so I can take the advantage of FusedTrack from this option on this route. It’s a good decision?
Thanks!

pause shouldn’t necessarily cause this as GPS should retain lock, however when still GPS can wander (very normal) and this could be causing those initial incorrect max speeds. Would be more concerned if after 100/200m it still isn’t incorrect as suggest a bad GPS lock (maybe go onto map screen and make sure icon is in correct position i.e. lock is good?)

Bridges - yes they can cause GPS locks to be lost. And yes due to GPS satellite positioning it might be fine going down one side and not another (slightly unusual but possible). Remember watch antenna and positioning isn’t ideal, so if sattelites are all in the sky off to your right when you run under the bridge and your watch is on your left wrist, facing out it could struggle to get a good fix, however coming back the other way watch and sattelites are all on same side and better fix is feasible. Some areas can be funny like that. Not sure how the S7 picks which satellites it uses, but on Garmin Fenix you can choose your options, and that can sometimes help improve fixes in weird spots like this.
Best to Good - basically changing GPS fix from 1s to 10s - the bonus is battery life, the trade off is less accruate tracks. Depending on terrain and speed you are going you may lose very little accuracy, or it can be a bit of an issue - depends on which has a higher requirement - track accuracy or battery life (the reason why you would want to use Good/fuse tracking). I generally found it fine for 95% of what I did, but then I am never overly worried about my track accuracy - as long as its fairly consistent on set routes, and its in the ball park - I really don’t care if it has me on the wrong side of the road for example - maybe if it was a massive triple highway - but for normal road - its not an issue to me).

@jamie-bg Thank you!
…1) pause shouldn’t necessarily cause this as GPS should retain lock…
Yes, GPS lock is good, my question is more oriented if it’s possible from software side (SWA) that the pause cause some problem, I’m not sure about this, the GPS posisition is perfect in less than 5 meters (maybe less). I can’t confirm this, from today I will put a extra eye on testing if the pause cause this peaks.
…2) Bridges - yes they can cause GPS locks to be lost…
Very clear, thank you.
Best to Good - basically changing GPS fix from 1s to 10s…
Yes, I understand the differences and the usage, but FusedTrack shouldn’t avoid this kind of errors that happen like on under bridges, tunnels, high buildings areas, etc? Because by this reason I selected Good, to use the FusedTrack that I understand it’s not available at Best.
Maybe the FusedTrack already correct the information, maybe the results without the FusedTrack would have been worse. -
@flypg I regularly pause my watch when I’m out walking. Sometimes to stop and enjoy the view, or to take photographs, or stop at a café. Some stops are 5-10 minutes, some are almost an hour. I have never had any unusual readings or data come from this. I would rule out the pausing as causing any issues.
As Jamie points out, bridges can cause issues with GPS lock (this is why I always disable auto-pause, as some watches will pause the activity if they lose GPS lock).
There isn’t much you can do about this, but hopefully most bridges/tunnels/etc don’t last too long and any corrections shouldn’t be too drastic.I agree with your thoughts that Fused track could in theory correct for the loss of GPS from bridges/tunnels, but I haven’t tried it and don’t know enough about it to offer anything further. It certainly sounds like it could work.
However, there is clearly something else causing the main problem, so we should try to identify and resolve the root cause, not the symptoms.
You mention that you operate with Adidas running alongside the Suunto App? Maybe this is causing a conflict? Could you try to replicate the issue (do the exact same route, speed, pausing, etc) with the Adidas app both running in tandem and without?
Out of curiosity, what is the Adidas giving that the Suunto App does not? (could be something to mention in the right channels as a request for the Suunto App )

Yes, conflict can be one of the problems, of course, I will try to replicate. Its the same route that I made more than 150 times this year and I reported one activity with very wrong data one activity with very wrong data. But on this thread is about wrong data, here is this strange peaks that sometimes are displayed and also I will continue testing.

Mainly I started to use to follow some Running Plans to follow and get points, by running, to use in the online store As in other loyalty plans, the points you earn are a joke, but it is entertaining. But mainly the Plans for me are important. I’m not a expert and this basic guidance is useful.
I can get the same connecting the Suunto Partner Service Connection, but I would not like to share all my activities with Adidas, because this I created this Feature Suggestion.

@flypg Great, see if you are able to replicate the issue. Try with a few combinations of settings, changing one thing at a time. Lets see if we can isolate what the cause is.
Hm, so Adidas gives structured training plans for running? I might have to look into that I mostly run trails these days, so it my not work for me, but it’s worth a look

I made various test in GPS BEST and GOOD and for me and my needs GOOD offer a acceptable value with some inconsistences, but still OK. I not used the pause, but looks that this wrong Max Speed or the strange peaks on the GPS track it’s not related to GPS signal, bridges or pauses because I used the S7 in both GPS modes on different ocassions and results are good, that means, that the cause of this strange behaviors is other. I used the same routes, I passed over the bridges intentionally, etc.
I only detected on one activity from today that have a Max Speed of 41.6 km/h that on the Speed Graph have a peak of 48.9 km/h

Into the city, with GPS GOOD, the errors are biggers.
