Google maps turn by turn notifications

am torn beteween opting for the Suunto 9 Peak and the Galaxy Watch 4.
I know, they are quite different products,
The Galaxy watch integrate seemlessy with my Galaxy phone, but i simply love Suunto products.
One question thoug I would like you, Sunnto 9 Peak owners to clarify: can I get turn by turn Google Maps notifications from Galaxy phone to show on the Suunto 9 Peak?
Google maps is very good for day to day navigation.
On the other side, how well does Suunto navigation copes with daily commutes?
Hope to get some feedback soon as I’m about to order the 9 Peak, but I first need to clarify this. -
@ricardo-marinheira what about the Suunto 7? Suunto smarts and WearOS together?
Or maybe wait a little while and see if a new version of the S7 running WearOS 3 comes out (I’m hoping there is one soon).

@olymay I simply love the 9 Peak.
The 7 is a whole different product I do not like that much… -

The Suunto 7 does 95% of what the GW4 does (they both run WearOS but the GW runs the newer version).
However, it also has the Suunto app and can do much of what the S9P can do. It might have the epic battery, but it has a better screen and better navigation/routing.It horses for courses, but the S7 is essentially the best of both worlds

@olymay I value mostly the S9P build and design, but from the Watch 4/ S/ I would just like to have turn by turn grom google maps.
All other typical smartwatch funcitons/gimmics are not important for me.
Aside from that, does the built-in S9P navigation have turn-by turn indications similarly to those in Google Maps? -
@ricardo-marinheira yeah, kinda. You need to premake a route and upload in to s9p, then you can get the view of a route as well as TbT navigation.
Route creation works online in suunto app, sync with the watch works offline as well as online.As for your original question:
I haven’t tried it, but suunto watch is only able to display notifications from the watch, Google maps is one of the apps that’s being supported. I’m not sure if TbT is treated as notification though. But in principle you can recreate a route in suunto app in a few extra steps and get the same announcements on the watch. -

I haven’t used an S9P (or any Suunto watch other than the S7) but outside of following a route within an activity I don’t believe the S9P does any sort of turn by turn. Within an activity and following a route however it is pretty good from what I hear.
If you want the turn by turn for following a route, the S9P should be fine for you. But if you want it for general navigation use while walking around then I don’t think it work for you.
If you aren’t bothered by smartwatch features and only want turn by turn for walking around, then the GW4 is way over specced and a seriously expensive bit of kit. Any cheap WearOS device will give you Google Maps turn by turn.
Yes, the GW4 has the newer version of Google Maps, but I’ve used the old version on my S7 and it’s fine. Although I tend to prefer using Google Maps on my phone to set the place I want to go, as this is not ponly easier to do, but it sends the info to the watch whilst using the phone GPS, thus saving the watch battery. -
@olymay
Agreed, when using GMaps on watch much easier to start from phone as watch:- limited travel options i.e. cannot set it to do public transport. If i remember correctly it is only walk, cycle or drive.
- the biggest issue is there is no search function, only a dropped pin option, so trying to find where you want to go is painful.
Otherwise you basically get same features as what is on the phone, including map, turn by turn directions.
So best option is to start it on the phone, which will then provide text direction notification on the watch, however when pressing on the notification it expands it and gives you the option of launching the watches GMaps app, which then loads in the full navigation (as per your phone) - or you can leave it as the text notifications…
