S9P review from a non-target audience
-
First at all, I represent myself, I’m a 3k, 5k and 10k runner who has max 15k mileage per week (based on past 2 years, about 10k per week if based on past 4 years LOL). As you know, S5 maybe the best watch suits me, I’m like the guy who’s running in the S5’s trailer. Instead, S9P (all Suunto flagship) is more hardcore, I cannot see any of the sports in S9P’s trailer happened in my life, none of them.
It’s the reason why I called myself as a non-target audience of S9P. Back in the days, I joined this forum at early 2019 with a Suunto 9 Baro (before S9B, I got Ambit3P and Spartan Ultra). It was the moment where Suunto announced to axe movescount. Within these 2 years, I saw the big progressing from SuuntoAPP, and Suunot’s improvement should be truly appreciated. Therefore, I’d share my personal options in a full schema, to let/help future customers understand S9P, to explain to Suunto team what I want, to make the next product better and better.
Previously, my S9B’s factory warranty expired, it’s why I get a huge silence about 4 months. Since my S9P has finally arrived, so I would make some noise in the forum again. A highly self-control customer only makes complaints during official warranty. (LOL) I finally could complaint to someone AGAIN for another 2 years.
For my Review, there will be 4 parts:
Overall,
GPS, GPS and GPS,
Bugs, features, and more.

Overall review:
My first impression for Suunto 9 Peak is IMPRESSIVE, I noticed some improvements for everyday wearing:
• The size gets reasonable, S9B is way too huge, S9P is better for everyday wearing. (If I’m in a dress shirt, I must tight my S9B in my lower arm under the shirt…)
• The trap gets stranger closure with the pin, the old S9B silicone loop is fragile…
• The OHR reading is more stable and reliable in everyday wearing mode.
• The Bluetooth 5 is faaaast! The synchronization with the phone is just instantaneous. For the sport part, it’s the same as S9B by now.

GPS, GPS and GPS,
Test is under GPS + Galileo in performance mode condition.
Back in the day With S9B:
I’ve made a lot of complaints about S9B’s GPS, (there is a post for it, Suunto 9 Picasso Edition )
I noticed the performance of S9B’s GPS is quite unstable, I remember in 2019, I still could get a very decent GPS trace but a year later, the GPS trace got worse in the same place with the same watch configuration, util 2021, I noticed a lot GPS lost during my runs. One thing I noticed as well for S9B, full battery in performance mode, it shows 25h in 2019; 2 years later, it shows 30h. I don’t know if one firmware has optimised something for GPS? Maybe the GPS firmware got better for long distance runner? I cannot answer it by myself.
But my S9B gets a very decent GPS trace for my last run with it.
With S9P:
The GPS trace for my first run with S9P is amazing, I could not beg for more, I still notice some speed drop, but generally it’s perfect.S9B VS S9P:
In one sentence, S9P can get more satellites than S9B, you can see in the chart, the number of satellites os S9P is always important than S9B’s.
Suunto seems work a lot for ultra runner, it could be nice to develop a new GPS mode to boost the GPS reception for classic middle-long distance runner(1K to 20K), they don’t need 25H GPS autonomy lol.
GPS test 2,
As I mentioned above, I’m not a perfect S9P audience - and now I show you the hardest GPS test for S9P in my usage - it’s hard for me as well.
A 10K-city-tempo-run.
In summary, it’s better than my last recording with S9B, but worse than my 2019 S9B recording. Less speed drops but still markable during running. After read the chart, I could understand the speed drops occur after satellites connection/losing.
Connected satellites seem not enough to ensure the best quality of GPS recording. Almost time the number of satellites is around 6.
Who can explain the story about speed dropping? It seems I will lost a small distance during this drop.

Bugs, features, and more.
For Watch:
The blood oxygen works weirdly, I tried it several times without results and thought it’s maybe a defaulted watch that I’ve just got, but suddenly, it shows 98%! Then it shows only about 80%…
Can we get the Training effect for Anaerobic as well (firstbeat)?
The Zombie notification is still up… (Suunto Dev works on it)
Why the EST VO2max has a big difference between S9B (68.2) and S9P(59.1)?
I still cannot understand the logic for rise to wake backlight, I see it turns on when I open my door, when I pick up my pen…just not when I want to see my watch.
Why it always ask me how I’m feeling after a move even though I turn off feeling?
For SuuntoApp,
Why we cannot set the user/HR information in the APP? It’s quite dumb to set it in every watch…
Can we get the Stride length in SuuntoApp?
And The synchronization of Suunto APP between two phones are weird… I have a main phone to synchronize the watch, but when I use another phone log in my SuuntoAPP with the same account, the sleep/steps/etc are partially synchronized.
Lift is the phone connected to my watch, right is the following phone, all training data is synchronized, but other information is not.
The Watch cannot connect to SuuntoLink anymore?

In memory of Movescount.com
SuuntoApp is pretty good now, I remember 1 year age, it seems SuuntoApp was just a synchronization APP, you only get basic data in this APP, however with later development from Suunto, SuuntoApp is now a completed training APP, we have all daily data in the APP and TrainingPeaks workload system. I don’t need another “fitness social network” anymore.
But I will miss Movescount.com where I got a lot of fun, watching my moves on a big screen is always a joyable moment, although SuuntoApp is quite awesome with my/any phone of nowadays.Hope SuuntoApp will get a Web Interface after all.
SportTrack.com could be used as a web interface of SuuntoApp, you can log in with your SuuntoApp credential.

@zhang965 Your review is very short, or the links are missing:)
-
Nice. Re zombie notifs we are on it
-
@zhang965 FYI I always get (on S9B) 25h with OHR and 30h with HR Belt
-
@zhang965 re vo2max I think it’s due to the one having history and the other no. Both should align eventually.
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos While chasing zombies, could you also allow for acting on notifications? Like dismissing them on iPhone, and dismissing and notification actions on Android like delete for emails or snooze for calendar?
-
@nickk ai ai let’s not complicate it but let’s see what can be cooked
But don’t expect anything soon
I know that zombies are for sure contained under the umbrella ️ corp
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos I don’t really expect that soon, but just wanted to leave it out there It’s really a quality of life (daily wear) kind of situation.

With S9P:
The GPS trace for my first run with S9P is amazing, I could not beg for more, I still notice some speed drop, but generally it’s perfect.Hi, Interested to know what GPS Combo you used?
I have tried GPS + Glonass: so so results - I get quite bad offset even though I run with watch face mostly facing the sky rather than facing the sideand GPS + Beidou: slightly better results for Northumberland UK - less offset noticed, very similar if not the same as S9B tracks
I know many variables / daily conditions can influence etc but still interested to know your sat combo used.
Many thanks -

Have you tried GPS only?
I use GPS + Galileo
No! I haven’t or indeed the galileo combo, both of which I will try
Many thanks

@zhang965
nice summary -
@nickk for sure.
-
@tonyg I think that the offset may be because of fused speed - as long as it stays constant until you change direction. But that’s just my hypothesis.
-
@łukasz-szmigiel interesting hypothesis; the offset does appear at random times after a 90 deg. turn, then sometimes corrects after another 90deg turn, not consistently; so may be coincident. My next run will be using Galileo combo, I will keep a closer eye on the offsets if any.
apologies @zhang965 for the slight hijack of your review. -
@tonyg I’ve observed this with previous firmware on S5 too (it hardly ever happens on current). I suspect that when running constantly if fusedspeed is at work, such offsets must happen in order to avoid discrepancies between pace and distance.
So when you turn and there’s an offset compared to your real location but you continue running, the offset will remain as correcting it would change pace.
I suspect there’s a certain speed and angle threshold for when it can be corrected.
