Suunto 7 not syncing steps and heart rate to google fit outside of runs/activities
-
@jamie-bg are you sure “Track physical activities” in Google fit settings on the watch app is off? If it is on then it’s tracking steps on it’s own. I used to have it on and, as you said, they would have similar step counts but not exactly the same. But once I turned off Google fit physical activity tracking then it would get the step count from suunto and be exactly the same. Not sure when or why it stopped.
But you are right, suunto basically does it all now. Still would be nice to have it sync with other services properly.

I went to Apps, Fit Goals, Settings, Fit Account…
Then ticked yes on everything.
Last few hours of Steps have possibly now appeared in Google Fit - having been a flat line 0 since I updated.
-
@nigel-taylor-0 Thanks Nigel, but is that because it is tracking through google fit on the watch or taking the data from Suunto on the watch? That is my concern switching that on, surely just doubles the recording and reduces the battery.
I logged a support call yesterday with Suunto. They were going off to test and would get back to me in 24hrs, still waiting…

@russellllr
Yes phone google fit app is all toggled off.
On watch - use body sensors is off, use location is on (could try that as off), track physical activity is off.
The impact of these changes is I now no longer see HR in the google HR tile - but no biggie as the suunto HR tile is so much better (better graph and active continous HR readings); and even when I was it still wasn’t showing up in Google Fit phone app (so no point). -
I try to verify it, but at the moment I got a hr measuring in Google Fit app on the phone. Since 8,30 a.m. no readings, but now a single dot, label from Suunto.
The graph before 8.30 a.m. is from my Skagen Falster 3 and the sleep tracking.

Okay, this was a single measuring out of Suunto app on the S7, where I started a mountain bike ride for 10 seconds. The 59 bpm was immideately synced into Google Fit by Suunto wear app.
-
Steps out of Suunto are syncing correct into Google Fit. I disabled all functions in Google Fit and deactivated all sensors and permissions (on the Suunto7 and in Google Fit app on the smartphone).
Today the steps were:
106 steps (Skagen Falster 3)
1795 steps (Casio GBX-100)
4834 steps (Suunto 7)
= 6699 stepsIn Google Fit on the phone actually were shown: 6509 steps (sync is often half an hour behind the actual steps)
I think that the steps from Suunto 7 are out of Suunto and not out of Google Fit.

Can someone please do a short test?
Disable activity tracking and sensors in Google Fit on the S7. Activate 24/7 step and hr tracking in Suunto wear app on the S7 ( add one of the new tiles and click on it to have the settings at the bottom of the screen).
Do a short run in your garden or your living room on the same place to collect steps for about 5 minutes without starting an activity in Suunto wear app.
After the test wait about half an hour and check your Google Fit app on the smartphone, if there is an activity showing up with 5 minutes and some data.
Thanks for testing.

@pilleus this is basically the exact thing I have been testing. Only steps AND heart rate data that take place during officially recorded activities sync with Google fit. The activity, with the steps and heart rate during that activity, sync with Google fit. The steps and heart rate recorded outside of tracked activity do not sync with Google fit ever.
-
@russellllr but I have the steps in Google Fit and Google Fit on the S7 is completely disabled and not configured.
And if I do a short virtual run in my living room to collect some steps it is listed in Google Fit on the smartphone as activity with steps and duration.
I don’t record it with Suunto wear app. That’s why I asked for a short test.

Yesterday I turned off all activity tracking within the Google Fit apps on both my phone and my watch. Activity, location, HR, all turned off.
I am still getting SOME steps recorded in the Google fit app, but way under the actual amount recorded in the Suunto App.
It does not state the source of the step data in GF, so I am assuming they are still somehow coming from GF itself and not from Suunto.
I am not getting any HR data transfer across.
I have not yet tracked an activity, but I am planning on a walk later today so will report my findings when I get back.
-
@olymay As far as I can tell, we only get HR data for time spent inside an activity which has been synced over to Google Fit.

tracked an activity
With a tracked activity by Suunto wear app steps and hr are synced to Google Fit.
But for me steps and duration of an untracked walk are synced to Google Fit (not hr). And this without recording it with the Suunto wear app.
May be that someone can confirm this?

That’s the thing, it seems we are not getting HR OR steps sync across.
The data is there so why can’t it be synced across? If it’s a battery issue, just do it once a day at midnight or something? So that we can see a summary of the day and keep a record/rend. Or at an extreme, only sync when on charge.
But please allow all the data to sync.
(and while we are on data syncing, please allow weight data to sync from Google Fit INTO SA, this would save me doing it manually each week (or more accurately, it would save me from forgetting to do it each week!)
-
@olymay could it be that another device is actually providing steps to Google Fit? Maybe the smartphone?

Yeah, it has to be coming from somewhere.
But as I mentioned, I have turned off activity tracking in GF in both the watch and phone, so I am at a loss as to where it could be coming from.

I deactivated now the sync from Suunto wear app to Google Fit. Google Fit itself is not configured and completely deactivated.
Steps are counted and shown in Google Fit. Must be from Google Fit itself.
Another strange thing is, that on the S7 in the ressources tile activities are shown, which are not recorded by the Suunto wear app. I think that Suunto wear app is recognizing a short walk or run without tracking or its a resync from Google Fit!?
Here a screenshot from the S7. Yesterday in the evening I did some tests without recording. These are shown in the ressources tile on the S7, but not in Suunto app on the smartphone.

@olymay Agree with you as my step data in google fit (on watch and phone) do not match suunto steps yet all my google fit tracking is turned off (on phone & watch).
Got to wonder if it isn’t GA location services maybe giving it data, and or its taking the suunto data which is synced and rebasing it into its own step account.
Not a major issue for me as barely using google fit anymore as suunto app now has pretty much everything that GFit has. -
@pilleus In the Google fit app settings you should see managed connected apps. Here you can see all linked apps/services that may be contributing to the step count.
Also, Suunto app on suunto 7 tracks steps automatically and, as far as I know, you cannot turn it off. So it may recognize things like running, even if you are not officially tracking it. That may be why it’s showing up in your resources but not in the app itself, since it wasn’t an officially tracked activity.
I really appreciate everyone’s help and discussion on this. Hopefully it’s just a server side update that Suunto can do to get it to full sync with Google fit again. I wonder why they don’t just add google fit to the partner services section on the phone app and have you link it there.
