So, what are you going to do after Movescount closes?

@haphaeu said in So, what are you going to do after Movescount closes?:
Agreed. I find it amazing how people like to get screwed and stick to the same brands. To me Suunto signed their death sentence with this, just like GoPro did some years ago with their invasive app.
I’m going to keep using my 8+ years old Ambit 2 of course, as I always have, downloading the gpx files from my watch into my computer, with openambit
And in a future hopefully far far away, when it finally breaks, I’ll remember this decision of theirs and make sure I get another brand that respects people’s privacy. Options may seem scarce, but there is a market and there are still people that see the importance of this.
Good luck to find support with software from over 8 years…
I would like to add some perspective. The last decade had been a big change in a industry, not only in GPS I’m talking about software/hardware. Bluetooth is in the version 6… wifi had evolved from b to ac… About 9 years ago a phone wasn’t what is today… the iPad was launched in the 2010 if I recall well.
So choose whatever you want, find a brand who will offer a discount to upgrade and a good watch.

For a user of ambit 2 what changed ? Not being able to log apps?
Can you elaborate on the privacy issues? I am not aware.Although, specially for ambit 3 users, we were “screwed” loosing some features, I see it as a new start for a brand. If it is the start that I imagine/want right now? Maybe not, but it is not my brand. And in fact they may be starting something different and in the long run “better”.
As users we always want full support, full compatibility, spare parts , etc
But that comes at a cost to the brands that may not be sustainable .
Even today we see updates on suunto app beta for iOS regarding the traverse, so they didn’t stop caring, it is just not on their priority.
They have resources to manage.
On my side I prefer to invest on a brand that “screw” a bit their past but work on a better future than one that at the cost of supporting old technology doesn’t innovate on certain parts. -

What specific privacy issues have changed since MC? I suspect you have more privacy with the Suunto App than with Movescount.

“What I am going to do after Movescount closes?”
I no longer use Movescount. I no longer use Suunto App either, although I’ve never really used it except for some testing and using the route editor. I sold my Suunto 9. My A3P is sitting in a box, and I occasionally take it for a run to compare a competitor watch against it.

@andré-faria
actually @sky-runner was prepared and did the step before MC was closed, just to be precise
I was not sure either if this or competitor watch thread was the right one… but it is what it is: he is using another brand now and that is his solution, why not?!
I can’t think of changing to Garmin or Polar. The only competitor would be Coros as they are now available in one of our biggest sport supply shops… but then: why?! I am really happy with S9B and I am curious what’s to come in the future -
@prenj best garmin I ever had was the Fenix 3 hr I even bought the 5xpro and still went back to the 3 now I upgraded to the suunto 9 baro and to be honest I still miss the Fenix 3

@ianpet
I know the feeling. I’m now trying out Suunto 9 baro, but for now I’m not too impressed to be honest. I’m missing Movescount, dedicated backlight button during activities, battery life outside of activities, the screens cannot be disabled or at least reordered even I don’t use them at all (heart rate, sleep tracking, fitness instructions).This heart rate screen pisses me off. Every time I want to go to the altitude screen I have to go pass this and there is this delay at HR screen. In A3P you could have easily disabled screens that you don’t need. Because of it watch feels sluggish, even thou every other screen works reasonably fast. Why would anyone put the slowest part of watch interface just next to the basic watchface?!
-
@ianpet once I also thought the 3HR was my favorite watch, then I realized it was mostly good-old-times effect and at that time I didn’t care much about the watch, therefore I was happy even if the tracks were horrid (and they were)
-
@prenj Turn off HR monitoring, the screen will not then be attempting to acquire your HR. Most of the issues you are mentioning are watch based not MC based, perhaps this is the incorrect thread. Connecting the S9 to MC did not change the things you dislike.
-
@brad_olwin
You are right, wrong topic. But just one more thing if I may. I have disabled daily hr. Is that it? It’s still trying to acquire HR when changing screens and it still slows down at HR screen. -
@prenj thanks for this. Imo you are 100% right. I just directly passed this to PO.
Here is also my feedback, not only you are right, but also in order to get a good HR at that screen it might take up to 1m

Edit: saw that you already have one post, wonder what changed.I have actually sold my Suunto 9 back in February 2020, right after I left this forum (I was here under silentvoyager name before). I continue using Garmin 6X for now even though there are a few things that clearly annoy me. But at least the platform is far more flexible, the battery life is far superior, and the accuracy is acceptable - on par of better than Suunto 9. I am used to have maps on device and won’t move to another brand unless there is a good alternative. With Suunto specifically I really dislike the idea of using Suunto App, especially the awkward way of organizing and pushing navigation routes to the watch where I have e-mail a route to myself or share it via something like Google drive. That is just inconvenient. Having mobile app only platform would be a strong argument against Suunto platform even if Suunto releases a new watch, and the same applies to Coros.

Many tools have integration with Suunto App (and more will have) which gives you opportunity to add routes from the tool/your computer to Suunto App without sharing/email, just in one click.

@sky-runner
is the golf feature still there and not possible to deactivate or hide?
Is it now possible to sort backcountry skiing / ski touring by total ascent?
Is it possible now to look up the ascent rate? -
@prenj good to report, hopefully this will get fixed for you.

Is it possible now to look up the ascent rate?Don’t know about golf. Couldn’t care less about golfing, but since all the watch menus are customizable I don’t see golf anywhere.
Don’t know about backcountry skiing. I only do running, trail running, and occasionally, very rarely, hiking.
Ascent rate field can be added to data screens. For example, I have it in trail running. Furthermore the units for vertical speed can be customized between several choices. I have mine in feet/minute.
But I find vertical speed to be quite unstable when conditions are windy. -

like in 2016 when I’ve had the F3… but no info in the app or web summary.
I just checked my old account: golf is still there and no sorting of total ascent for backcountry skiing.
I’ve requested and suggested this over and over again -

(sorry for changing my flatter than flat XC to BC, I’m just afraid there’s no skinning for me during this season )
