Battery drain ambit vertical.

As @Prenj said, only Movescount website can be used to alter setting on Ambit/Traverse series. Movescount App was removed from store due to digital service transition (please use the search function of the forum to find more about it).
You didn’t use previously any software with your watch?
-
@andrasveres watch is only a couple of weeks old as it was a father’s Day gift, so using preinstalled software
-
@thebigeasy I meant software on mobile or computer. In this case I recommend you to:
- download the user guide from Suunto website
- download/install the Suunto App to your mobile and connect your watch to it (this will be used to sync moves wirelessly to Suunto app account)
- create a Movescount account for you to be able to alter some of the watch setting unavailable directly in-watch
- download/install the new SuuntoLink to your computer and connect the watch using USB to both Suunto app and Movescount account (this will be used to sync moves to Suunto app and sync settings from Movescount via cable)
- use the forum search function if you encounter any difficulty as most of problems are answered already.
Enjoy your watch and hikes.

@andrasveres thanks will try that tonight

Vertical should last about 10h with GPS set to best, not quite sure what you mean by powersave, but if you were using navigation (as mentioned before, this switches GPS to best), I’d say 8h might sound about right.
It doesn’t mean that Ambit-line never-ever encounters strange battery issues, I have a log of an activity where my A3P dropped from ~80% to ~2% in less than 3 hours, watch was about 8 months old back then and it was 3 years ago. But I’ve never noticed it happening again, same watch is still my daily driver and training watch, logging about 5-10 activities per week.
-
@margusl I just set it thru exercise menu on running as there was no hiking menu, it was basically just to track the route. The watch locked itself at 2% battery so must be some sort power save thing, it unlocked once plugged into charger. I reckon it only lasted about 7 odd hrs as the last mile was over extremely tough terrain, really not good enough imo.
-
Oh that power save, should have got it from first post. Strange part is that it sometimes kicks in stopping the activity and lockin all the buttons, but on the next day it’s happy to keep recording all the way down to 0% while keeping all the normal functions alive.
Anyway, if you believe it drained too fast and it does not align with your previous observations, I’d just keep monitoring it and worry about it when it becomes reoccurring issue or trend. That anomaly of mine was just 1 time out of 1300+ , I think it’s a failure rate I can live with.
Though to me personally, 10h mentioned in user guide is not too far from 8-9 hours. From 7? Well… maybe…
Switching from GPS best to GPS OK in Movescount will stretch recording time to around 100h according to spec, in real life I would expect around 80-90 hours.
When using Suunto App with Vertical, keep in mind that it’s quite aggressive on keeping Bluetooth connection alive and this is where you’ll probably notice some higher day to day battery drain.
-
Lets not forget that battery lasting time from user guide is most probably given by ideal conditions which rarely happen in real world GPS use.

Bluetooth hasn’t been causing any issues with battery drain, since Saturday night I’m only down 15% with Bluetooth on all the time.

It’s not that visible when most of the charge is spent for recording activities. While mostly in watch mode and without being connected to Suunto App, A3P lasted well over 3 weeks (it’s speced for 30 days ). I can’t speak in numbers, but the moment I switched from Movescount app to Suunto App at the end of 2018, it started loosing charge way faster. As a guesstimate, I’d say the difference was about 1/4 … 1/3 of previous standby time. But it was kind of acceptable trade-off for more stable connection. Both apps were set up to push notifications.

A bit late noticing this but I was a little disappointed with the battery life of my vertical. I expected about 10hrs on GPS best but usually get about 8. When I queried this with Suunto the response was that linking it to a HR belt knocks the duration down (and to a foot pod or cadence sensor), so using the HR belt 8 hrs was about right. I tried using it on GPS good setting instead but the watch lost GPS signal a few times part way through runs and never reacquired it - in fact I had to reset the GPS before the next training session before it would get a signal. The watch kept recording time, altitude and distance (distance presumably from fused speed) but on download the track just ended part way through the route. This didn’t occur in woodland or built up areas either, it happened in open fell country.
