Suunto 5 and VO2max
-
I have been trying to find out how to get VO2max -feature working, I have read manual, I have tried to find posts from someone other having the same problem, I have tried to find videos or some walktrough how to get it working. I called the customer service and their help was to go to the tab and follow the guide.
I have set up all the details about my self and after that it says I have to run or walk for 15 minuter with gps and hr on. Well I don’t run, but I have been on walk many times now and still there, on the tab, is only the guide. I can live without that feature but it’s kind of principle for me to get all that I paid for.
So does anybody know what could be the problem before I change the watch to some other product, I have been looking at Polars watches, they are getting good reviews.

As far as I understand it - and what some other posts in this forum said - it is absolutely necessary to have a ‘variation’ of your heart rate during an activity (or a few activities). Walking with a ‘stable’ heart rate does not seem to offer enough ‘data’ to ‘create’ VO2. This is how it seems to work with this licensed algorithm wherever it is used; so at least for VO2 a change to another brand might not solve this issue.

Without running is going to be difficult to get VO2MAX. With walking you are going to need lots of uphill to boost your heart rate and give variability.

I guess I have to wait until the weather allows me to run enough for watch to get the data it needs for VO2max. This time of year it’s so slippery on the icy roads and trails that I don’t want to even try. There are days with almost no snow or ice (winters are not what they used to be) but I think I’ll leave it to springtime.
Odd that they give option to walk for getting VO2max tested, if it doesn’t work. I have done pretty fast walks (I think) with up- and downhills, so the walking should have worked if it does.
Thanks for the replies, I leave VO2max for now and get back to swimming

@Jesse-Havusela VO2max is working with walking and hiking, be persistent and use basic sport types…

@Jesse-Havusela Did you manage to get Vo2Max working on your watch ? I have the same problem I guess as I have set up everything and still not getting Vo2Max out of my watch.

@tfanlegacy VO2 Max should be working. You will need enough intensity for the watch to make an estimation. It will require two workouts and will depend on how you have your HR zones set.

You need valid data for any vo2 max estimation. If its “dirty” (detects anomalies) it won’t accept it whether it is gps or hr. If you see tracks are weird or wild swings in heart rate, thats the cause. Then you need more than 15 minutes of uninterrupted valid data from both. It rules out part of the garage in garbage out. You hr resting and max also have to be sane. Not sure if it actually take cadence, I think it does, it all needs to match, at least ballpark.
