Calories burn refresh on exercise. Watch vs. Chest Strap.
-
Guys, for the first time I’ve run into a puzzle with Suunto. I’m using the Suunto Race 2 and a chest strap from the same brand. I’ve never really paid attention to calories burned, but recently I decided to add them to my training screen.
When I’m running using the watch’s OHR, the calories on the screen update about every 30 seconds. However, when I use the chest strap, sometimes the burned calories only update after several minutes.
I have a second Suunto strap and also a Race 1 for testing, and it’s the same situation (so it’s not an issue with my particular strap or watch). I assume it might be something like battery saving on the watch/strap - it reads heart rate continuously but only updates calories from time to time.
It’s a bit annoying (I’ve recently started roughly tracking calories - yes, I know the watch isn’t perfectly accurate and there’s no point in obsessing over those kcal numbers, but I’d like to have some comparison between workouts). Usually when I run, I run for about an hour. Sometimes the calories get updated last time around the 50-minute mark (like when I start it updates after 3 minutes, later after 10, 15, 23, 31 etc.), and then at 1 hour when I finish the workout, I see the little syncing circle on the watch, but in the summary I still have the calories from around the 50th minute… as if I’d been standing and do nothing for the last 10 minutes.
I did another test using only the watch’s OHR without the strap, and as I mentioned, calories were updated every few seconds or so, with the last update at around 59:30+ of the run. I ran a few more tests and typically, from start to finish, the calories update every 5-10 minutes. If the last update happens around the 50th minute, the next one might not appear until more than an hour later.
Yes, I know - first world problems
. It’s not a huge issue for me, since after training I mainly look at other parameters, but it’s puzzling. Is it simply that the strap -> watch data transmission happens every few minutes? Or is this just how Suunto watches work with external devices? Or is it specifically how the Suunto chest strap behaves?
Just curious.
