Vertical 2 ( or Vertical 1) on bike handlebars during freezing temperatures
-
@MdzOtt said in Vertical 2 ( or Vertical 1) on bike handlebars during freezing temperatures:
I think the specs talk about -20 C or even -25 C.
Specs for the Verticals are -20 C to +55 C, the Fenix 7 specs are -20 C to +45 C - so interesting to compare…
-
I don’t know about the temperature, but for cycling the v1 is in my opinion the better watch. I have the V2 now but previously the V1.
For everyday use and most sports I prefer the V2 screen, it is sharper and clearer and I can read it better without glasses on!
But the v1 screen is easier to follow a track on the bike.

I have the V2 but you need to take into account that if you mount an AMOLED watch on a handlebar the display won’t stay on (at least not in full brightness). If you put it on your arm it will light up when you raise your arm.
For that reason, I think you could be better off with the V1 which has an always on MIP display (and you may also benefit from the solar charging). -
@2b2bff Yeah, it was only -3°C but the Fenix 7s still turned itself off even though the battery was charged to max before ride. So major disappointment for me.
-
@Audaxjoe @gkaempfer During navigation on V2 does the display go completely off, dims or goes to dark mode map navigation? That bigger display is appealing but V1 is probably better choice for me.
-
I ski regularly at -10 to -20 degrees with the watch staying on my jacket without any issues. Yesterday I also washed it in a washing machine by accident. Still running strong. The hardware on Suunto watches is so much better than software!
-
@Jan-Krejčí if you have AOD activated it goes to dark mode. It is still OK for viewing the track but not as easy to spot side roads. You could use it OK, but the V1 remains easy to read at all times.
When I first purchased the V2 I was going to send it back because of this issue, but after keeping it for a week or so the clearer and larger screen on the V2 won me over. (Screen is technically the same size but as no solar charging ring is on the V2 in reality it is bigger and much clearer for my old eyes

@gkaempfer Hi, I often use my Vertical 1 on my MTB handlebars with the training function “Backlight -> Olways ON” to see the map clear when ride my bike.
Question: V2 doesn’t has the function “olways on” like V1 ???
I would like the new V2 but I need to know if I could use like V1…thanks -
@matteo_000 I don’t think that there is such a setting on the V2 as there is no backlight (AMOLED…). If it were always on at full brightness I think you would really suffer from the battery drain.
-
@matteo_000 V2 is AMOLED so it doesn’t work like V1. After a while display changes to dark color and you would have to touch it to activate full brightness again. Tried Race 2 on handlebars and I didn’t really like it and it was hard to see a route in a dark forest. Other than that it’s okay-ish.

I am also 9pp user who are looking to upgrade. It is really hard decision v1 or v2. I did not yet see how AOD looks during the navigation on v2. I did not see this mode in any YT video yet. Can anyone show some pictures how navigation looks like o v2 when dark mode is used or AOD like mentioned in this post by @Audaxjoe . Thank you!
-
@krakra So I found the video where it is shown, basically it goes to 9PP navigation mode - blue line on black screen. Section navigation, time 6:54.

@gkaempfer in V1 you can find “Backlight -> Always ON” in the sub-menù:
- select the type of sport activity - sport mode (es. bike)
- menù “training options”
I don’t know if V2 has the same menù when you choose the type of sport activity

@matteo_000 there is no such option on the V2. You can choose Always On Display, but that implies a dimmed version of the display after some seconds that you don’t interact with the watch.
