No SW updates for months ?
-
Hello,
I own a Suunto Ocean since November 2024.
I like this watch but some problems are really annoying (number of steps to low by 30%).
I can understand that release cycle is lower due to the fact that it is a diving watch.
In the smart watch market, software is a major part of the customer experience.
No SW update in almost 8 months and no communication to customers about the next SW update are for me a serious lack of business good practices.
Sadly, I started to see which watch could replace my Suunto Ocean.
Best Regards, -
@dasm99 as far as I know, there is a release coming soon
-
@isazi
Someone already said „very soon“ 2 weeks ago -
@tinten.addi as far as I know the release has been finalized, going through final testing, and should be released soon according to Suunto
-
Hello “Soon” to ! The Ocean users would then also be ready… would be nice… yes yes I know nothing was promised and everything is exactly as described… I also feel a bit outrageous to demand and ask… is still being tested with high pressure? I’m still waiting for the soon update… let me guess… the update will be released together with the Vertical 2… soon but also very soon…
-
@dasm99 If you bought a watch for “promised” features, you shouldn’t have bought it in the first place.
And if what matters to you is getting “a software update”, take a Garmin and enjoy your monthly new selection of ugly watch-faces and new bugs. And if not having an update is enough to make you consider a new watch, by all means, buy a new watch.
You paid Suunto to have a watch, it does exactly what it says it does, updates and new functions are a bonus, you’re not paying Suunto every month, right ? so why would you be entitled to anything more than bugfixes ?And, about step count, the under-counting is measured against a calibrated pedometer ? or another watch that spew a different random number ?

@Elipsus And what is the reason why all other Suunto watches are developed much faster according to your definition? Weren’t each of these updates closed the errors that are still on the ocean? Don’t you think the buyers of the Ocean also deserve these updates? I mean we’re talking about 800 euros and then such an experience… that’s weak…
-
@Sascha-Domres I’m not a diver neither a developper, but you may considerer that a diving device needs more time to developpe, test…to be sure you won’t have a diving accident…
-
We will release an update soonish
-
@Tieutieu Honestly, I think this argument is now exaggerated. The updates because of the dive function can take longer… But almost 9 months? Who’s supposed to believe that? Yes, safety first. But at some point this argument is sucked off. If Suunto can’t get updates for the Ocean, maybe something is wrong with this software in general?Meanwhile, Amazfit, Huawei etc. also have diving functions. Do you really think that these providers do not test as conscientiously as Suunto …
-
@dasm99 I asked the support bot and received this answer
“Suunto Ocean does not have firmware updates in the same way as other Suunto dive computers do. The Suunto Ocean has been designed to maintain the same high level of accuracy and reliability throughout its lifespan. Therefore, there are no plans for firmware updates for the Ocean at this time.”
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos said in No SW updates for months ?:
We will release an update soonish
Soonish
?
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Please don’t be angry but what does soonish mean?
Answers like The update comes when it comes, nothing was promised, to assume that an update comes at all is presumptuous, the buyer should be grateful etc… actually confuse me a lot … I’m not personally attacking anyone. But as far as communication is concerned, I would have expected more transparency from Suunto… would be nice you could forward that … Again, I don’t attack testers and developers… I think you’re doing a good job. Nevertheless, I can understand the displeasure about ocean policy. A watch in this price range deserves more attention…
-
@Kevin-Major
That would be very sad and disappointing. Never touch a Running System? Sounds like "Sorry we can’t get an update because the stability could suffer… Good that other companies see more confidence in their development…
-
@Elipsus Interesting setting for a watch based on software. I mean we’re not talking about an analogue clock here. I’m afraid with this philosophy Suunto will have a hard time considering the competitors…
-
The Ocean is built on the same platform as the Vertical, Race and Race S so I’m pretty confident any delays to getting out updates are nothing to do with the hardware and nothing to do with the operating system. This would, in my opinion, really only leave 1 sensible reason for the delay and that would be around additional regulatory or safety evaluation requirements that aren’t needed for the other watches using the same platform.
I mean, if Suunto have the updates released for other watches they aren’t reasonably going to say “nah, let’s not bother with the Ocean, let’s piss off a bunch of customers for no reason”
-
@Kevin-Major there are actually plans to release an update soon, as @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos said. A release candidate is being tested as far as I know. It is not the 2.44.46 update though, it is a different one.
-
@Sascha-Domres I’m just sick and tired of people asking for updates.
updates are NOT always a good thing, and Suunto (and their competition) proved me right times and times again.
I won’t say that I don’t enjoy the new shiny stuff, but i want a watch that “works” realiably and does what i bought it for, when i bought it.
And too many times i got a watch that “stopped” doing what i bought it (for example, measuring HR) because of a botched update. -
I agree with you on that. But standing still while others move forward is actually a step backwards. It’s up to you whether you want to install the new update or not. Obviously, there are two – maybe three – groups here: some want the update, others don’t, and for the last group it doesn’t really matter.
-
@tinten.addi I would say it very slightly differently :
- people who don’t now there are updates or won’t even notice
- people who buy a watch for what it gives at the moment, but don’t wait for updates especially (but are happy when they come) - I sit here
- people who focus on what is missing (imho will always be disappointed)
