Map black grid issue very often
-
I’m very often facing black grid issues. Some times I need to play with zoom-out/zoom-in to get the map back. On longer routes (and larger area), the map can be displaying fine but as moving the neighbouring tiles turn to black grid. After some time the map might get back, or maybe not. Last Sunday, on a large ride (~11h), I could say that nearly half of the time I had the map on, I was seeing the grid instead of the map. Even though some times zoom-in/zoom-out might “fix” it, it is really incovenient as you have to change your focus from what your are doing to a tool which is expected to work.
Am I missing something? Is there a magic way to pre-render the tiles or anything else? I see other posts with related issues but no clear asnwer. I have also seen another topic where coordinates are mentioned but when I’m on action I can’t take note of coordinates unfortunately. Thanks in advance!

@Panagiotis-Kritikakos Same thing happened on my SV nearly two weeks ago above 2000 m asl. Even though the Race was in my pocket I forgot to check it cause I was in some difficult terrain and using my poles. And then the issue disappeared but I admit that I didn’t pay much attention to it. Hopefully, Suunto is working on some map updates.

Same for me. Sometimes I get black grids in locations that worked fine previously. Zooming in/out a couple of times sometimes helps, but not always. A soft reset solves it.
It seems to happen more often when I travel to locations distant from previous activities and use the map there. Even those I’ve visited before and it worked fine there.
My guess is that there is something wrong with the memory/map loading buffer, and it sometimes doesn’t clear and replace previously loaded map tiles that are no longer needed with new ones.
When I really need to rely on navigation and want to prevent this issue, I soft reset my watch before the activity…

@inkognito Thanks for the info, I’ll give it a try.
-
that seems to be a feature Suunto is particularly proud of

@Stefano-M64 Well spotted

@Stefano-M64
That’s the not yet released Tartan watchface -
@Stefano-M64 yep, unfortunately many photoshoots happen with new watches, before connecting to wifi and leave on the charger for a while, so this happens often in pictures

@inkognito quite spot on on zoom in out . I have noticed this as well and it has worked every single time , although I don’t usually have issues with the map unless I leave it on for long a period

I agree with your analysis. I had the issue two weeks ago I was distant from my day to day activities.
Zoom In/Out solved the issue every time. -
it seems though that it is more frequent now than it was in the recent past…

I had that as well and deleting and redownloading the maps helped. Not sure why. Just saying in case it helps .
-
it could be a cache refresh related problem
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Redownloaded the map just now, and immediately got several black tiles at 200m zoom near my location. Waiting several minutes and zooming in/out didn’t help. A soft reset did help. The issue is that sometimes the same location works, sometimes it doesn’t, possibly depending on cached map tiles. My feeling is that it is not really a corrupted map issue that a re-download would solve, but rather really a cache/memory-related problem.

@inkognito ,@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos redownloaded the map . saw the grid immediately as well. coincidence?

Coming back to this … it seems something related to another thread (?) pulling - showing the map ?
It seems the grid is more evident when fast screen changing occurs -
@thanasis if you mean zooming out quickly, then yes, I also see a black grid quite often recently.

Did a ride today, after a soft reset, to my usual area and had no issue. The question that needs to be answered is if it will work on an unknown area. Probably I’ll have an update tomorrow.
-
Long ride yesterday, completely new region, lots of map using, no problems faced, not a single black tile.

@Panagiotis-Kritikakos That might be because of the soft reset… I have this issue when I don’t reset my watch for a long time. It is usually fine for several days after soft reset…
