After two days with Race I found few bugs. This one makes me most nervous🙂. If I turn on the HR specific zones for running and cycling, I have to set these zones obviously. Then, if you want to check the zones (after first run with AT detected), there is no chance! You have to turn it off and then ON. Whyyyyyy? Also, each change in custom zones copy this change to default zones! So there is no chance to have different default zones and specific zones for running or cycling.

Sorry, my fault🙃. It’s working fine. It’s just not allowed to change the maximum heart rate for different activities. Garmin does that, which is why it confused me.

@Jan-Suchánek Suunto’s approach of allowing only one maximum heart rate (HR) value is more physiologically accurate than Garmin’s method, which permits different maximum HR values for different activities. This is because maximum heart rate is a physiological constant—it does not change based on the type of activity being performed. Whether you are running, cycling, or engaging in another form of exercise, your absolute HR max remains the same because it is determined by your cardiovascular system’s limitations.

In contrast, the lactate threshold (LT) does vary by activity. The point at which lactate starts accumulating in the bloodstream differs between running and cycling due to variations in muscle recruitment, biomechanics, and efficiency in oxygen utilization. Suunto correctly recognizes this distinction by allowing users to input different LT values for different activities, ensuring a more precise representation of intensity zones.

To optimize your HR zones in Suunto, you only need to enter your lactate threshold values at the beginning of zone 5 for each activity (running, cycling, etc.). This approach ensures that your training intensity is accurately reflected without altering a physiologically fixed metric like maximum HR.

Thanks! That´s exactly what I did. I can change the other values no matter where the max is.

I had a similar issue with tracking sports metrics and spent a lot of time troubleshooting. Eventually, I found that using Cogniteq’s sports software really helped streamline everything and saved me a lot of time. Just wanted to share this in case it helps anyone else facing the same issue. Here’s the link: [link removed]

I totally get you! I also prefer setting a lower max HR for cycling because my legs give up way before my heart does on the bike. Had the same issue with HR zones once, and it drove me crazy until I realized the system wasn’t actually broken, just different from what I was used to. By the way, have you found a sweet spot for your cycling HR zones, or are you still tweaking them? And big thanks to @Ghost for the explanation 😊

I slightly lowered the zones for cycling and forget it. Anyway, during my last ride, Zone Sense detected my aerobic threshold at the same value as when running.
