Sunnto race Stainless steel or titanium
-
Hi,
I’m going to buy the new Sunnto race but don’t know if stainless steel model is strong enough (against scratches if black color) or better titanium.
16gb is enough for maps ?
Thanks a lot ! -
@Nicolas-AULANIER I’m not sure that the titanium is significantly harder (or stronger) than the stainless steel. However, the titanium watches are not generally painted like the steel ones, so when they scratch the scratches are not very visible (titanium will oxidize to essentially the same colour). Most of the steel watches have a coating, which is easier to scratch and will be more visible. The main other advantage to titanium is it is a little lighter weight.
Disclaimer: I don’t have a Race myself but I have other Suunto watches and base this on my experience and reading other forum posts. I have a steel S9PP that has a couple small attaches but they are not very noticeable.
Other people have commented in the past that 16 GB seems adequate for maps - you can probably find old posts with more details.

@Nicolas-AULANIER my biggest decider is that I can’t wear stainless steel watches for more than a few weeks, as my skin reacts to it: I’d wait for the Ti.

@Ze-Stuart really? Race S and Race is coated. So no direct steal contact.

@suuntastic I haven’t tried them, but historically, I’ve always had a problem with stainless steel. My skin has expensive tastes!

@Nicolas-AULANIER 16Gb is plenty for maps… My wife has the Race (Steel / 16Gb) and we have the same maps loaded (I have the Vertical Ti / 32Gb).
Although map sizes are different for different counrties etc. To give you an idea of how much you can hold with 16Gb.

UTMB SECTION - SWITZERLANDThe app makes it easy to download and set maps as needed. I quite like the approach. And the app automatically highlights the map closest to you, so you can adjust on the fly. The watch internal memory specified is only used for maps, so you can be confident that even 16Gb has you covered for even the biggest adventures.
