configurable storm alarm threshold?
-
Hi there,
since the storm alarm has been mentioned of being mostly a miss rather than a hit (although my Ambit 3 peak was quite spot on), i was wondering if we could configure the threshold in either time or value to increase or decrease the triggered rate that issues an alertthanks
-
@thanasis Sorry it is not adjustable. Depending on the amount of elevation gain/loss during an exercise, it could be too sensitive. Mine works reasonably well, no device can predict a storm accurately, especially fast developing thunderstorms. I find mine works well when a low pressure front comes through our area, typically in the winter.

@Brad_Olwin Thanks
-
@thanasis I’m with you: I haven’t had a storm alert since my Ambit 3 Peak.
-
The threshold should be the same as the Ambit 3. 4hPa drop in 3 hours.
I did receive storm alerts with my Suunto Vertical. At almost the same time, my girlfriends S9Peak also triggered on a storm alert. Pretty accurate if you ask me.

I often wear two Suunto watches or more:). Storm alarms for me trigger nearly identically on all newer Suunto watches 9PeakPro; Ocean; Race; RaceS; Vertical. They behave similarly but without the fast drop noted by @surfboomerang you will not get a storm alarm.

Reading this makes me think you run like this all the time

@surfboomerang I’ve read that the threshold is the same, but I wonder if the polling interval or some other part of the logic is different.

@surfboomerang those watches are too close together… GPS interference. More like this

Well the ocean looks amazing

@thanasis
so many watch faces… i dont even know where to look

@Brad_Olwin Hi Brad. Could you share what’s the brand of the nylon band of your SV? Thank you.

You will love this, since I cannot find good velcro bands from Suunto (that I have repeatedly suggested they make) I have a Garmin Ultrafit band with pins ordered from Amazon. So far no problems, HR is much better with this and it is very light.

@Brad_Olwin Yes, I know this one. I use the orange 26 mm for my 7X and for the SR I bought the Coros one which comes with three pins. So, I’ll buy the same Garmin black nylon one for my SR as well.

Bringing this topic back to life …
the storm alarm doesn’t seem to be really triggered as supposed to . Contrary to my ambit 3 peak , which I tested today over a storm the vertical didn’t show anything . I feel as if the sensitivity is somehow different -
@thanasis Please make sure you enabled Storm alarm in the settings.
The threshold is very clear. A drop of 4hPa in 3 hours will trigger the alarm but not every storm comes with such a pressure drop.Edit: Also, which watch do you own? Does it have a barometric sensor?

- It goes without saying that the storm alarm is on
- the main watch is Suunto Vertical Ti (it has a barometer)
what I am saying is that by observation the Vertical does not respond the same way as my Ambit 3 Peak ( I own the vertical for approx 2 years now)
The Vertical and my 9Peak seem to have a very similar approach whilst the Ambit 3 Peak not
I am thinking and have stated also in the past (maybe I’m wrong though) that the automatic adjustment of barometric pressure to altitude vs weather changes may be the reason for some delay in the triggering.
So it may (or may not of course) be the case that the newer devices initially treat the pressure as altitude variation and then the hPa variance to be calculated versus a slightly offset measurement, resulting in delays in this triggering -
@thanasis hmm… I have a Ambit 3 peak(bought 2015) and a Vertical. Last month they both triggered at the exact same time (only a few seconds difference) when I was home. After that I turned off storm alarm on my ambit so they both don’t trigger
So, at least for me they work the same

thanks for the reply.
Just our of curiosity
Have you defined the ambit to use barometer or automatic in alti-baro (if you set the altimeter i think the alarm is not triggered) ? -
@thanasis I have it set to automatic. It has been in the drawer for 2 years. Haven’t used it since I got my vertical. I just make sure to keep it charged, I don’t think you can turn it off and I don’t wanna leave it with empty battery…
The times the storm alarm had triggered on my vertical I haven’t been home but last time it did I was home and got surprised they both triggered at the same time.
