Vo2 Max totally unrealistic... Why?
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk so, more strange findings: in progress my Race says “record at least 3 outdoor runs to get insights” - but I did exactly that…
My fitness age is 20 btw and my Vo2 Max “superior”… Hahahaha
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk Nice to ear that you’re back in sport ! I think that to have a good estimated vo2max you need a lot more activities maybe about ten.
By the way running and interval running is way more efficient than trail for the estimated vo2max. -
@Kramble did you got the vo2max value with heart rate belt? Or only OHR?
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk said in Vo2 Max totally unrealistic... Why?:
So, after a looooong time of not being able to run, I finally try to get back on track after a foot surgery…
My Suunto Race is new since I had to stop running, so I did exactly three runs with it in the last 2 weeks. Other than that, my device “knows” me only by bike.
Now, I am struggling hard to get back to running as everyone can relate who has e er stopped running.
I am pretty much surprised that after 3 5km runs with an average pace of around 5min/km and a very high HR in comparison the old days and even stops every 1 to 2 km, my Race tells me that my Vo2 Max is supposed to be 50!!!
This is of course totally off and can never ever remotely be my real value …
How can this measurement be so gigantically off though?
Those were your first 3 runs ever with the Race? I do know that the value itself takes a while to come down
Mine is also 50 and defo not accurate. Runalyze has me at 40ish which just looking at various pace charts is definitely more in line
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk lot has been said. VO2 on watch takes time to reach a good estimation.
But, most of all, you won’t have an exact value.
I went for a real test of VMA/VO2 last year. The VO2 mesured was 59,5. my watch gives me values around 55/56. But I mostly do trail running. When I run on road (very rarely), value tend to get higher.
So, my advice would be to look at trends in time, or when your value will be “stabilized”, to compare similar runs. -
@Olaf-Gottschalk You only get those insights, if you use the internal OHR. If you are using an external HR strap, you won’t get those insights (algorithm licensing issue). Maybe the next update solves this, who knows.

Of course with HR belt. I do not trust OHR at all, never have.

WTF? Then, why does the watch display this at all if it is not valid??

Why unrealistic? 50 sounds ok for you.
-
@wmichi are you sure of that ; for me only licensing thing in the Suunto race is ressources (nap) ??!! A friend is using hr strap with SR and it works just fine…
-
@Tieutieu I have read this info regarding threshold value and licensing here in the forum. Unfortunately I can’t find the post again, sorry.
On the other hand I have also read somewhere here, that we should run 3x with OHR to get the threshold and race estimate values and as soon as we have it, we can use an external HR strap and also get updated values from this point on. Maybe your friend ran a couple of times without a hr strap?
I have the SR since release and run 60k - 80k per week (always with external HR strap), still no threshold value and race estimates. But I don’t care.

Hm. Maybe you’re right and I am too pessimistic.
I did not run for almost 2 years and it feels hard, but I ride my bike around 400km/week… So maybe I got this Vo2…Thanks!
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk The latest software update today does have the LT and Running Estimates updated from data with the chest straps
-
If you look at the V02Max running calculators and have a rating of 50 then you should be able to run a sub 19 minute 5K. Does that seem right for you?
-
@superweeble can you Share Here please the Vo2max race distances calculators and Times?
-
@GiPFELKiND This is the one I was using: https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/vo2-max-runners
-
@superweeble True VO2 can be only measured in the lab. Watches, calculators and formulas only give rough estimates: so you can see the trend not the real value.
