Compass while scuba diving?
-
@Frank-Scholer it’s being tested (I have it on my watch) but Suunto does not share its update roadmap.
-
Thanks @isazi for the update. Let‘s hope then that it will be rolled out in the next few weeks…
-
@isazi Can you please tell us which other new features are in that upcoming release? Fully understandable if you cannot. Thanks
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 as far as I know, compass and bug fixes, all diving related.
-
Any news about this topic? I will dive next week and would love to use the compass.
-
The compass application, which is currently not available in SCUBA mode, by itself does not have the basic direction-taking option that all normal diving watches with a compass have, so we hope that this will also be corrected (adding compass and scuba options on the compass) with an update. Because the compass as it is now on the watch is not very useful for diving
-
@dreammaster It is indeed kind of useless right now. It is a bit disappointing not to have that function. I hope the update will come within the next few days… hope remains
-
I do hope Suunto releases an update soon. I’m going on a diving safari as a guide in October and without a compass the Oceanic is useless. I’ll have to buy a Garmin. I don’t understand it at all. After legends like Stringer, D family, EON etc… Suunto launches such an incomplete product. Too bad. I was looking forward to it.

Compas should be in the hotfix released today
-
That’s awesome!!! Updating the Ocean now!!! Can’t wait to test it in the water tomorrow!
-
Could someone write a short review about the compass?
-

@PavelTE
compass while dive mode is updated. However, it is not shown in arch. just shown with text and number and still not bearing. -
The compass update is very, very disappointing. Really, Suunto, you should be able to do much better! The new ‘compass’ in dive mode is all but useless. Divers need a true compass display such as found on many other dive computers. Or at least the compass heading should be shown on the arch, along with a locked bearing.
The current solution will continue to force divers to use an additional, separate compass.

After a few months of waiting for an update, we received a compass that is absolutely unusable in a diving environment. I’m waiting for this update to see what direction Suunto will go with the Ocean, and I don’t like it. I think Suunto Ocean will never be a serious diving watch, so mine is going on sale and I’m turning to a more serious solution like the Shearwater Peregrine TX (aprox €750) and for a sports watch, the Amazfit T-Rex 3 came out, a great watch for aprox 300 €
-
@arnoutl Yeah. I feel the same way. It’s a big shame. I waited a long time for an update and in the end a big disappointment. But I haven’t bought Ocean yet. I thought it was a great replacement after the D9tx. But that’s a big mistake. The old D9tx is much better than the new Ocean. For diving, of course.
I’m sorry that Suunto doesn’t comment in any way on the direction they want to go with the Ocean. I’d happily buy one if Suunto gave some vision that in six months time the dive mod will be at least the same as the D5. -
I think my D6i will have to remain in use still for some time.
I really want to switch to an Ocean because looks and specs are promising. But on current software this is not for (my) diving yet. -
@jwil02 Yes. That’s absolutely true. It’s a big shame. I was really looking forward to Ocean.
-
@PavelTE @jwil02 To be fair, apart from the compass, as a dive computer, the Ocean is really awsome. I did about 20 dives with it in Egypte (Marsa Alam) this Summer. And I loved it. I previously had a Suunto Eon and this is definitely a step up. The display is incredibly clear and crisp, even in direct Sunlight and the arch is a great way to keep informed of NDL, tank pressure, etc. And the battery life is just awesome (amazing, when you consider the dismal battery life of the D5…).
At this price, I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a good dive computer. And the sports/smart watch functions are equally good. Just a real shame about the compass. I now just carry my old Suunto compass on a retractor. Hopefully, Suunto will bring us an update with a usable compass in the near future.

I bought a new Suunto Ocean last week with Tank Pod, I have also a suunto D5 and Suunto Vyper.
My Suprise was when I found that there is not a dedicated screen for the compass and bearing cannot be locked like in Suunto D5, I updated from the D5 thinking that as a divecomputer it will be much better. I have nother topic related to Diveplanner, I will post it in the corresponding topic.
So please suunto do include a screen with compass, the small window is not usefull, you cannot see your air consumption at the same time when you have navigating.
