Suunto Ocean general discussion
-
@Highlands Yes. I’ll share some pics once in my hands
-
My initial impressions after wearing this watch for two days and taking it for a swim:
Pros:
-
The features I’ve tried out so far more or less meet expectations, but it’s too soon to tell especially since I haven’t taken it to depth yet.
-
The issue with lag with previous Suunto models appears to have been resolved.
-
The watch is stylish (albeit chunky, I prefer something closer to the Race S’ size) enough to pass off as an everyday watch. The lack of style points has been my main complaint about many competing products (whether sports watches or those with dive computer functionality).
-
Sleep tracking (including naps) is spot-on in terms of timing. I don’t know about the sleep stages.
Cons:
-
The touchscreen is a fingerprint magnet, which in turn causes glare in strong lighting conditions, more so than what I experienced with Fitbit and various smartphones. So, I bought an aftermarket screen protector hoping its oleophobic coating would mitigate this issue. It should be arriving in the mail soon.
-
Blood oxygen measurements can take some time, and are sometimes way off the mark compared to what my medically certified oximeter is reporting.
-
There is no “proper” way to migrate my data in bulk from a different fitness platform. So far, I have resigned to paying for the Health Sync app to import my past activity data from Fitbit to Suunto. Due to API limitations, this can only be done bit-by-bit and might take a week or so to complete; and only for activity data. Other data like 24/7 heart rate, HRV, sleep, etc cannot be transferred.
-
Freediving features cover the only bare basics. It lacks a surface interval alarm/notification, even though this is found on other Suunto dive computers.
-
The 60m depth limit is adequate for my needs, for now, as a beginner freediver but I can’t rule out the possibility of outgrowing it in the future. Mentally, it’s a thought that bugged me when I was deciding whether to make the purchase.
Bug report:
-
The 24/7 heart rate monitoring stopped and got stuck on “Measuring” during a nap. While the watch’s other functions continued to work, it stopped recording my heart rate during this period and consequently didn’t record my nap as well. A soft reset got heart rate monitoring working again; this only happened once so far out of two naps.
-
When I fall short of my sleep targets (which happens a lot), my morning sleep report states I am “-h:mm of target”. I believe the correct spelling would be “off target”.
Feature requests:
-
A surface interval alarm for freediving: There should be options to either set a specified time in minutes and seconds, or to calculate and vary it based on time and depth of the last dive. So far, the Atmos Mission 2 has the best thought-out freediving features on the market that even include pool disciplines, so I hope Suunto finds some “inspiration” from there beyond just surface interval notifications.
-
A red light mode for the screen and flashlight: Stargazing and astrophotography are some of the main things that can get me outdoors, but the screen can be too bright for a dark-adapted eye even when brightness is set to its lowest setting. Once disrupted, it could take up to 30 minutes to regain dark adaption. Turning everything on the screen into dim shades of red could mitigate this.
Software version is 2.34.42, which appears to be the latest at the time of writing. Thank you.

@kohjl if you are using Healthfit, try RunGap as It can transfer specific date ranges so will import in bulk. Both iOS.
-
@Brad_Olwin Thanks, but I’m an Android user, and I don’t think even RunGap can get around Fitbit’s API limitations.

I am using the ocean since about a week now. I really like the watch. I was not able to take it to a dive yet so i cannot say anything about that yet but i love having a watch like my old d5 that also allows me to track normal fitness activity.
I however still have some little trouble with it:- You can set a wake up alarm in the watch, however its not possible that the watch vibrates when the Android device’s wake up alarm goes, it would be nice if that could be in sync somehow
- I have to manually open the suunto app to sync my steps to suunto (and with health sync then too google fit) which won’t work anymore if it was steps from yesterday already (you have to manually re-sync then). It would be good if you could somehow setup the intervall the watch syncs steps to the app
- the worse thing: when i dive in germanies lakes i usally use a 7mm half dry neopren. However since my arm is already quite big the normal strep with 230mm won’t fit anymore after adding 14mm more to my arm’s diameter, for the D5 there was a strap extention for dry suits available but due to the D5 having a 24mm and the Ocean having only 22mm thats not compatible. Will there be a 22mm extention for the ocean?
Greetings

@isazi its pretty much the default one as the default is also up to 215cm.
For the D5 there was this:
https://www.suunto.com/de-de/Produkte/Taucharmbander/suunto-dive-1-silikon-verlangerungsarmband-24-mm/suunto-dive-1-silikon-verlangerungsarmband-24-mm-schwarz/
Which is long enough for a thick neopren or a dry one. -
@svenbrnn my bad, I thought the default was 175

I know you already commented that today’s super nice firmware update will arrive on the Ocean later. Any circa timeframe (weeks, months,…) you can share? Thanks.
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 not this summer I believe, but Ocean may still receive an hotfix release (fixing bugs and dive related) during summer
-
@isazi Thank you for answering so fast.
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 well, my answer is not official because I do not work for Suunto
-
@isazi Thanks. I know. And fully clear. Anyway highly appreciated.
-
Does anybody use the Ocean already for sleep tracking and can tell if it shows the sleep score on the watch? Thanks
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 it shows the sleep score
-
@isazi You are so fast! Thanks. But it does not have the new watch faces of the actual Race/Vertical/9PP firmware update? For that it also needs the latest firmware update, which will take time.
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 it has at least one new watch face, the one with the diving ring. To be honest I lost track of all watchfaces, and I cannot turn it on now (need to travel today).
-
@isazi Thanks again. Safe travels then. The background for all these questions is: I am thinking of getting one. Although I am no diver. It just looks so stunning. I am trying to find out if it can be my daily driver instead of the Race or even the Race S (which I find also interesting, but mainly because of the new OHR sensor and lighter weight).
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 I can help. The Ocean has the same watch faces as the Vertical but does not have the firmware update so you cannot select the complications as with the most recent update. Because this is a diving watch updates must be carefully tested and cannot affect diving functions. The update will come to the Ocean but it will not get updates as often as the sport watches. I can post photos if you wish.
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0 I have the 3 as of now The Ocean is the biggest and most stunning watch among them, the Race is not far in beauty and I find the crown pleasant to use and is my daily driver and than the Vertical being the titanium is the lightest that I use in demanding environments (don’t care a lot about scratching it etc.).
