I haven’t bought one of these (yet).
I go on multi-day outings in areas without any internet. I tried a Garmin watch - any mobile/phone “app”-based services are mostly absent without an internet connection. Does the Race have a similar limitation? If so - do any other Suunto products avoid this problem?
The manual clearly says “Some features require an internet connection…” but avoids being specific.

      Thanks for your insights!

@dunots weather forecast is one thing you cannot have without internet connection, and creating routes with the app (you can still sync routes that you created while having internet connection, but not create new ones).

@isazi And on iOS you cannot import tracks (eg. gpx files from another app) while offline

              @isazi I would just mention this :

              • on IOs (don’t know on Android ?) SA seems to “load” OSM maps in sort of cache => when I’m offline I still can see trails on aera’s I’ve been looking at before in SA (but I don’t know what are those “cache” settings - how long it stores - how much datas)
              • but routes manually drawn can’t be saved. So It’s only usefull to verify a distance for instance.

              Suunto’s devices at home :
              Vertical titanium solar
              Suunto Race S
              S9pp titanium sand
              Suunto Wing

                Again perhaps only on iOS:

Offline use limits and complicates adding new POIs (“Points of Interest” = Garmin’s discrete “Waypoints”) to the watch.

Details only relevant if that’s your thing.

but be happy, while online, on iOS, you can create such POI and sync it to suunto watch during an activity --> not possible in Android “yet” https://forum.suunto.com/post/134556

I cannot deny it: we live in age of unevenly distributed miracles and wonders.

Another example that I may just be late to noticing:

It’s no longer necessary to modify (sacrifice) existing App POIs to create new ones offline.* A new location saved on the watch can be synced to the App, edited (BYO altitude, of course) and the changes synced back to watch. Admittedly, it initially shows up on the watch POI list without its edited name but, after selecting it, scrolling through its details and repeatedly swearing at the device in Old Ogham, the new name seems to settle in.

*That’s still easier, natch. And I’d still like user choice of coordinate format. With such creation on the watch alone, even, as legend tells us was once possible.
