      Hi,

Which specific sport modes support Vo2max measurement ?
I read in the manual about running/walking activities, but does this mean walking equals hiking/trekking/mountaineering ?

      Thx in advance,
      Dimitris

I have used the Vertical for a few months now. And I still cant see my vo2max anywhere. I have hiked, mountaineered, and walked for at least 60-70hrs during this time, and gone up many mountains… It never updated. I went for 3-4 runs on perfect flat ground (more or less) for 5k’s three times with a Polar H10 chest strap for accurate HR readings, and it still doesn’t show my vo2max or estimated fitness level anywhere… I have tried a full hard reset and many soft resets. All it says it that I need a couple of runs to show the metrics… So I hope you find out. But I can for certain say walking, hiking and mountaineering does not count.

I just did a short uphill hike, but I don’t see vo2max measurement.
I used hiking as the selected sport mode.

            Update here.
I tried a “walking” sport activity. I walked around the city (30 minutes, total 3 kilometers) and I finally got a vo2max measurement.
The estimated vo2max number is almost the same with my laboratory result!

I used the same suunto HR strap/sensor as in the previous “hiking” exercise which didn’t produced the vo2max result.
Both my watch and suunto app are updated to the latest versions available.
I also have reset my watch 2 weeks ago, but in these 2 weeks I had only two more hiking activities (with no vo2max estimation result).

Really? Where do you see the vo2max?

@neonix I saw the vo2max number in the end of the exercise, in the summary. The number was reported somewhere in the end of the summary, close to the PTE value.
And also I see it under the progress widget in the watch.
It is also reported in the suunto application, in the exercise details.suunto vertical vo2max walking activity.jpg suunto vertical vo2max walking activity_1.jpg suunto vertical vo2max widget.jpg

@dbefas Wow, In the two months I’ve used my Vertical, and finished many runs, and especially many mountain hikes and walks (probably around 90-100 activities in total) I have never seen that screen. Hard resets, soft resets, H10 chest strap, perfect conditions many times…

Maybe I should just RMA this watch.

@neonix, make sure you have provided all the info like sex, age, weight, rest HR, max HR etc.

It might be that the algorithm needs to take all these into account.

I have. Multiple times. Everything is correct. And I have over 1600 activities in my Suunto account. And I have tried hard resets and soft resets. I have tried with the IOS and Android apps. I have tried with the built in HR sensor and Polar H10. And I had two weeks with a Vertical and Garmin Fenix 7 Pro on my right wrist, and the Garmin read my vo2max with zero issues. So the issue is the Suunto. Not me, or the settings, or the chest strap. Flaky and unreliable software at best.

@neonix sorry but I got my VO2max on the Vertical after the first run I did. similar to most people, so your “flaky and unreliable at best” comment is laughable at best 😛

Helpful comment when trying to come to terms with all the bugs. Thanks for your help. Glad the moderators here set such a good example. “It worked for me so it must be you”. Reminds me of the iPhone 4, where due to a bad antenna design, people would drop calls if holding the phone “wrong” according to Apple… I guess I am wearing the watch wrong. Please tell me how to wear it right so that it works.

@neonix using your own medicine dear, does it taste good?

“if it works for me it must be you” is the same as “if it does not work for me it must be you”. Now, either the issue is more nuanced, or we are two idiots. And I bet, it’s the latter 😄

Seems to me you are taking my input personal, when all it is is frustrations about a 800 euro watch not doing what it is advertised to do (for me). I have tried all suggestions many times, and naturally, when things still don’t work I become frustrated.

If you take statements like “flaky and unreliable software at best” personal, then maybe you are not a good fit to be a moderator on the watch manufacturers support forum. That’s all I have to say to you.

Maybe he just think it is “unfair” as a generic statement.

For sure something is not working for your case.
                                Why, What ?
Human error, software issue, hardware issue, bad HR readings, too slow pace ? Who knows

                                But we’re going OT

@isazi not wanting to pick sides here but definitely he’s not the only one with a V02 Max problem. I myself am using the Vertical for more than a month now with multiple runs and still don’t have a V02 max estimation. Taking a quick look at the forum and I can find many others with the same issue. I know here is just a forum of users and not the right place to resolve the issue but I get he’s frustrated

@mfreire it’s also about the lack of communication and precise info from Suunto. I personally asked the VO2max requirements from Suunto support when the user manual was being too vague. Since then I’ve been under the impression of having to run at Z3 for some 15 minutes.

Today I learned that someone got their result by walking with HR under 113 bpm 😮

I’ve had Vertical for a year now and I’ve never seen my VO2max. I can live without it, but all this hidden or contradicting information sucks big time.

                                          -Sports mode “Running”

                                          • Use WHR and not HR belt
                                            -Flat route
-Make sure your runs have at least 10 minutes of running in HR Zone 2 or higher and good GNSS (GPS) tracking (it usually is, but just in case).
We have a nice S+ “HR Zone Duration” app to measure time in HR zones
-Do 3 races that meet the above criteria.
